Watercolor painting of a scene that appears to be a youngster with adults at the entrance of a school, a total of five figures in the composition. The work, 13" by 10 1/4" (20" by 18" in a contemporary gold frame, no mat) is signed at lower center by well listed German artist CARL HUBNER (1814-1879). Antique watercolor painting of a castle-like structure in an extensive landscape, 7 1/4" by 10 7/8", 14" by 17" in frame, signed with initials "M. N" and dated 1882 and, curiously, also 1888, at lower left corner. This is likely by an amateur watercolorist. The work is a survivor, with paper browning, broken off corners, and a small puncture at center right. Presently it is loose and unmounted within the framing.

The work measures 16" by 19 1/2" (24" by 28" in newish framing). The painting could almost be called "Hudson River style" but it is clearly of European origin. At first glance appearing to be a print, this is in fact a painstakingly executed watercolor drawing, likely French I am thinking, measuring 16" by 20 1/2" (23 3/4" by 28" framed). The subject is of formal 18th century (earlier?) figures lounging on a classical Versailles-like terrace. They are surrounded by a balustrade, fountain, distant trees, and, in the immediate foreground, a border of oversized flowers...

This is a wonderful large watercolor (18 1/2" by 27"----28" by 36" as framed) executed in the nineteenth century by English artist WALTER TOMLINSON (ca. 1833-1909). The scene is Ann Hathaway's famous cottage in Stratford-on-Avon, which Shakespeare lovers will recognize as the town associated closely with the Bard himself. When I first saw this I assumed it was a print and was amazed to find that it was indeed an original work of art...

Peter Moran, American, 1842-1914, "Noonday". A finely detailed original etching by Peter Moran, this image measures 7 3/4 x 10 5/8 inches, 1887, state II/III, cat: Wright- 94, with the separate frog remarque lower left, pencil signed, framed. Peter Moran was one of the foremost artists of the American etching revival of the late 19th century. He was known for his images of cows and farm animals, as well as his atmospheric scenes of the American Southwest.

An unframed antique, 19th century watercolor of two Indians paddling a canoe in a raging small river between steep cliffs, signed at lower right with what appears as "Catherine Stuart 1879". The 7 5/8" by 10 3/4" work strongly reminiscent of paintings and watercolors by noted Canadian artists Cornelius Krieghoff (1815-1872), Alfred Worsley Holdstock (1820-1901), Frederick Arthur Verner (1836-1928). Strangely, an online search has not turned up information on the present artist...

This pastoral scene depicts sheep in a mountainous area, causing me to believe that it may be European in origin. The artist has captured 6 sheep peacefully grazing on grass, with no shepherd seen. The serenity is enhanced by the calming green of the grass and the blues of the sky and distant mountain. The linen on canvas is mounted on board, and framed under glass in what I believe is a refurbished frame which is generally in excellent condition...
