Haku Maki was a well-known Japanese print maker of the second half of the 20th century. About 20 of his workw I called Big Red and a few Big Blue or Big Green. This is one of the rare Big Blue prints. By my reckoning he did about three true Big Blues, this is one of them. Until this true image appeared I only knew of a catalogue image which we enhanced into a nice blue here in Beijing. This is the Real Deal...

An antique oil on board painting of a chestnut thoroughbred in the barn, 9 1/2" by 12 1/2" plus 7/8" inch wide contemporary wood frame, signed with conjoined "AS" or "SA" monogram and dated 1899 at center left. The work is most certainly by a listed artist. This is skillfully executed, in high key colors of pink, yellow, and violet shades. There are some condition issues; a 1" hairline diagonal surface abrasion in sky at center, and several punctures/pressure cracks from the reverse through to the drawing at left and top, and in the busy sage clumps at right ...

Antique (circa mid 19th century) watercolor and ink drawing, of the famous ruins of Palmyra, Syria, which were partially damaged during the relatively recent ISIS occupation of the archaeological site. Research indicates the piece is after an early 19th century print. Artist is anonymous. Dimensions are 9 3/4" by 14 3/4" inside the mat (with hand drawn lines) and 16" by 20" overall (unframed, just in the mat, which is laid down over the art). On reverse someone once wrote "Palmyra Turkey"...

A finely painted watercolor portrait of a good looking gentleman wearing a black jacket and a white shirt, stock and collar. The talented artist specifically painted the entire piece in shades of white, black, and gray. Note the way he used white highlighting on the left collar and shoulder of the sitter to give a sense of depth to the piece.
