“Watermill at Brantwood”

Born in Liverpool, W.G. Collingwood was an author, artist, antiquary and Professor of Fine Arts. In 1872 he went to University College, Oxford, where he met John Ruskin. Bio: Ernesto Alcántara (1933 - 2019) created a vast body of work along many themes: volcanoes, the Sierra Gorda, seascapes, landscapes, nudes, still life works, travel sketches, political satire, fairy tales drawn for his daughter, characters, with Sor Juana, Don Quixote, and Rembrandt being predominant.
His techniques include oil on linen, prepared by him in his studio with rabbit glue, linseed oil, and tempera; engravings on copper or zinc using burin, dry point, etching, or soft ground;...

From the Cochran school of art where it was exhibited in the 1930s this oil which is unsigned shows the first black model of the school. Done in oil , more information coming soon…..
At first glance appearing to be a print, this is in fact a painstakingly executed watercolor drawing, likely French I am thinking, measuring 16" by 20 1/2" (23 3/4" by 28" framed). The subject is of formal 18th century (earlier?) figures lounging on a classical Versailles-like terrace. They are surrounded by a balustrade, fountain, distant trees, and, in the immediate foreground, a border of oversized flowers...
Young Flute Player is the title of an oil painting by Benedetto Luti from the 1720’s, now in the Hermitage. An earlier version by Luti depicted a young boy in a blue jacket without any instrument. This engraving, made by Victor Marie Picot was published in London in 1780 as Boy and Lute, obviously mixing up the motif and the artist (!). Contributing to this is probably the Walpole family crest having been pushed in between the letters of the title...
Oil on board, 18" by 30" (23" by 35" as framed), the scene at dockside in Venice, Italy, gondolas at the ready and figures walking the dock, sun-washed buildings in the background. The painting is signed, though awkwardly, at lower left "Arthur V. Diehl", leading me to think originally that this was by that noted American impressionist painter who died in 1929 (Diehl had created throughout his lifetime, from memory, mostly, Venice scenes, even though he had only visited there as a young man)...

Large oil by J. Syer (1815 - 1885) British, this pleasant country scene was painted in 1870. It measures 51 1/2" wide x 38" high on the inside of the frame. On the back of the canvas there is a label that reads "Scene on the River Llugwy, North Wales." and says to keep the label attached for authenticity. This canvas has been relined, and there is a very tiny puncture on the left side near the fence.

This colorful print is an early Maki embossed print. It is a quite small print done in a very low run. Only 30 copies were made. Maki started doing 50 copies by 1962. Earlier he may have lacked the confidence to do runs of that size so he did 30 as shown here The three red suns are dramatic, The print is signed in white ink, an early Maki touch. The 3 suns shimmer. The title is in kanji – a rare Maki style. This is Ji hao 31 [Signal 31]. The paper is double thick, an early use of such...
