This is a rather unusual and visually arresting contemporary work by a Japanese or Japanese-American artist, signed at top right "Yasushi Saito" and dated there '78. An oil on canvas, unframed, measuring 23" by 19", the work is difficult to describe: a carp-like blue fish at right center appears with conical mountains that resemble Mount Fuji or desert peaks, as stunted bizarre vegetation, possibly trees, complete the visual feast...

Anne Lane studied art at George mason University in Virginia, completed her education at Saint Patrick’s college, Ireland, where she studied theology and philosophy. The tonal and contemplated intensity of her paintings reflect her 10 years spent working as an artist under the desert sun of New Mexico. Her vibrant style, resonant with color and baroque in detail, swoons its delight over her canvases...
Very antique drawing of a building, maybe a hotel/drinking establishment combination, large for its time and place, dominating a street scene filled with a number of tiny yet interesting figures, including a drummer at right; two horses; and even a dog. This work, apparently unsigned, measures 9 1/4" by 13 3/8". The artist used a soft paper and some kind of gouache or tempera, which allowed him to show fine detail, as well as a light pastel touch in the sky...

A group of THREE 19th century English botanical prints, two framed identically in gold with closed corners, the third framed in a different gold frame with beading. The matching pair measure 19 1/2" by 17 1/2" in the frames; the final piece slightly smaller at 19" by 16". The print in that latter piece, by artist Fitch, has horizontal creases, one sharp; the year "1846" is written in pencil at bottom edge. The identically framed pair also sport matching green French mats, adding to the qualit...
A framed nicely worked crayon on paper drawing of roses (possibly, Alberta wild roses?), signed at lower right "M R 1944". The stiff wove paper sheet measures 15" by 11", and as framed (to the top of the arch), 22" by 17". The framing appears to be the 1940's original. I acquired the work locally here in Los Angeles some years back. The initials "M R" and the disciplined way the letters and numbers were formed caused me to think the work possibly by major artist Man Ray (1890-1976), who did...

Impressionist small contemporary painting of a knoll in sunlight and shadow, 8" by 10", unframed, unsigned. This is a quickly executed work, almost a sketch in oil, by an anonymous but skilled artist. It is in excellent condition. The regular size would facilitate buying a suitable frame at a modest price.
An Old Master woodcut, likely one of 118 images illustrating one of the greatest books of the German Renaissance, going by that same name, Theuerdank. The book is considered something of a chivalric romance, relating the fictionalized, romanticized adventures of Maximilian I in the course of his journey to the Netherlands in 1477 to fetch his bride, Mary of Burgundy. Apparently Maximilian, also known as the Holy Roman Emperor (1459-1519), wanted to achieve a measure of immortality. Wanting to gl...
Large oil on canvas, 52 1/2" by 37", unframed, the name "SERGEI BORISOV" on the canvas overlap, the subject a scene of Cold War era Russia. There is much going on in the image, which is an idealized urban, industrial landscape. The Russian is difficult to translate (I have been helped by a friend who reads Russian), even to a Russian speaker/reader, but the gist of what is being said is that the proletariat and workers must prevail all together to work for the Communist ideal. Also, it could ...
A wood engraving, late 19th century, titled at bottom center "The Yosemite Valley, California", the image a breathtaking panorama of the waterfalls and sheer cliffs of the world-renowned natural wonder, set off by foreground trees and rocky ledges. Although the vintage print is perhaps not an actual Harper's Weekly work, it is in that vein and style. Not examined out of the frame, which is an attractive dark distressed burl wood or quality wood simulation. There is a very subtle hand coloring...
Oil on canvas laid on board, 21" by 34" (26" by 39" as framed), unsigned, circa 1880 I would guess, the painting consisting of a classic Hudson River view with steep hills bordering a river, a boat completing the scenery. There is a very nice luminosity to this particular example, a very nice handling of the light in the leaves of the trees. The painting has an approximately 5" long horizontal old cut in lower portion as shown, not unusual for a work of this age. There is also considerable un...
TWO unframed paintings for the serious collector of Native Americana by listed and auctioned California and Southwest cowboy artist M.A. GOMEZ (1910-1972), each measuring 24" by 18".
