Note 10 part II continues to discuss the evolution of Maki's prints.
This is one of three research notes that were numbered 23. This one is about Work 73-2, a Maki homage to a 19th-century Chinese writer. Dan Tretiak wrote: Enigma. The original eBay seller wrote this in his listing. He really got it right. Maki’s print has the four-character phrase as done by Deng in his writing in the 19th century We confirm Deng and Maki were in sync. The arrangement of Maki’s gold seal is more used in Chinese than Japanese. In any case ENJOY

Born at Terheyden North Brabant on April 21st, 1806, Petrus van Schendel studied at the Antwerp Academy under Mathieu-Ignace van Breen (1773-1839), a painter of historical subjects. He then worked in Amsterdam for two years before moving to Rotterdam in 1832 where he made himself a reputation as a portrait painter. He remained there until 1838...
The 3 photos are of Jacob Jordanes portrait of he and his wife in 1621-22. The painting on panel shows the same design on her vest and I believe it was copied from Rubens. Please refer to Flemish painting in our listing. A new lab report confirms the gold color is real "GOLD" on canvas!!
Haku Maki was a major creative Japanese print maker of the second half of the 20th century. His major output from 1965 to 1990 consisted to several different themes of prints Kanji was the main theme for the first 15 years of that period. Then.
Ceramics was second. But he also did a large number of prints with persimmon on theme. Most of the persimmon prints showed just one fruit. A few showed two Only two showed 3. These are shown here
Both prints are serene no jarring colors or edges...
Work 73-12A is a firm and strong dragon not fierce not wimpy. The central kanji is offset by a small yellow Maki sun at the top left and a red splash on the right. They counterbalance each other and give color and verve to the whole print.
This is a very large portrait of a dark headed lady in her finest clothes. It appears to be mid 1700's and more info to be added later.
Work 73-56 L (fish). This is the second of Maki’s three huge prints that I have owned. This is Work 73-56 L (fish). Several aspects of this image are intriguing. My archive of Maki prints reveals that Maki produced over 100 different images in 1973. I have been able to account for many of them: 1 to 50 and 99 to 110. I had never known what went in the middle. Now I know at least one was work 73-56, the third huge print that Maki did. It is 3 x 6 feet...
In The Life and Works of Haku Maki I refer fairly briefly to his Big Reds and other large prints of the late 1960s and early 1970s. In this Research Note I present a more thorough compendium of this type of image and commentary. If any readers know of an image which should be in this Note, please let me know. For now please enjoy these.
Poem 70-63 (Me) was acquired in 2010.
Poem 71-90 ed of 108

NOTE: This is the first part of a two-part note. The second part is Note 7 B.
Please read the research note in frame 12 of the photos. There apparently was some misnumbering--there is no Note 13.
Daniel Tretiak, after publishing his book The Life and Works of Haku Maki in 2007, found that he had more to say about prints as they came into his life. And so he wrote Research Notes and published them on this site.

Juan Pablo Salinas was born in Madrid in 1871. He studied at the San Fernando School of Fine Art. In 1886 he moved to Rome where his older brother Augustin, also a painter, was there since 1883 on a scholarship awarded to him by the government of Saragossa. The two brothers lived in Augustin's studio at Via Margutta in Rome. At the same street there was Chigi Academy where Juan Pablo took classes...
This Guest Research Note 1 is much ado about Nothing. The Maki print in question is 73-50A (Nothing). The essay is by David Bieling.
This note discusses newly emerged prints (it was written in July 2014). Daniel Tretiak wrote: Please enjoy. I own A C W and Flower Song 5.
This is a surprisingly good kanji It was done in 1972,slightly beyond Haku Maki's core period for such small kanji. It is the character for Mu or Nothing It is a very abstract depiction of the character, more so than most of Maki’s rendering of Nothing, which he did many times. This image is sharp and concise and it has drive. It has the Maki style and balance:a seal and the bottom margin. The seal at the right is balanced off by the splash at the left
The third part of Note 10 looks at the prints Maki probably did in the 1969 to 1975 period but that, at the time of Dan Tretiak's writing this, had not yet come to light.

Most if not all the prints in this series were sold through Red Lantern Gallery in Kyoto. missing J K L M N O - other than G and S.

In 1971 Haku Maki produced two large prints, one Sun and one Moon. Sun shows a dramatic sun with a red dash all surrounded by a gold field-- Poem 71-100. Poem 72-101 is Moon with a similar design. There is a dark spot in the center. Each print was produced in editions of 156. This pair was offered privately and on eBay by a very insightful seller from Tennessee.
After these presumably successful runs Maki did a smaller pair, each with the same title and same design...

This Florentine master artist is considered an Academic Artist. Kim Tkatch was born in the Ukraine in 1963. He studied Fine Arts at the Kiev Art Institute in 1988. His earlier paintings expressed "mystical" feelings through cryptic patterns and mythical figures. In 1992 Tkatch immigrated to Israel where his style began to change. Today his paintings have a more realistic perspective although his work has a magical flair...

This is a copy of the 17th century portrait of Rembrandt's son Titus around 1668. The canvas has been relined and is mounted in its original stretcher. The frame is a old replacement frame. Born in Lyon on May 24th, 1869 Albert Andre was to become one of the most renowned of the post impressionist artist. He was a painter, sculptor, writer and museum curator. He began his training in Lyon as a silk pattern designer. He then moved to the medium of painting. In 1894 Renoir was so impressed by his work at the Salon des Independance that he recommended Andre to the famous art dealer Paul Durand-Ruel, bringing Andre's art car...
Dan Tretiak wrote about a print he didn't own and simply described it here: sad stuff.
This research note looks at rarely seen Maki prints including early ones like Work Mu 2, done in 1961, and Symbol 2 from 1957.
Big Green shows 4 moving figures.A similar image is in the US in the kas frane but it is 3 moving figures. I think these were not frequent uses for Maki Poem 71-84
The print consists of vertical strokes, a mid-1960s series of six different images. The sun is large and shimmering. The paper is very heavy; the print is in good condition. It measures 12.5 “ x 18”.
Oil on canvas, view size 26 1/2" x 20" (THIS PIECE WAS PART OF THE IBM CORPORATE ART COLLECTION) As one of the most famous and celebrated portrait artist in the history of this country it is nearly impossible to summarize this mans life in the space available. He was the second child of Charles Wilson Peal's 14 children. Of the legendary Peale family of artists Charles Wilson and his son Rembrandt were and continue to be the most famous and sought after. Not only was Rembrandt a painter, he was ...
The image on the right is an enlarged study of the vest worn by the Mother in the Van Dyck portrait. The Portrait of a Woman and Child was painted in 1620-21 by Van Dyck. The unusual design on the vest matches that of Rubens. The embroidery design symbol means family love. Again, I believe this represents a Flemish Honeysuckle which appears in over 17 Flemish Old Master Paintings. A new lab report confirms the gold color is real "GOLD" on canvas!!
