A scene of an adobe with the classic protruding wooden beams, a low wall, springtime pink/white flowering trees and a split rail fence completing the composition. The work is apparently unsigned. It is laid down (glued) to Masonite panel. It shows signs of having been rolled in the past--long parallel vertical cracks in the paint, as shown in several images. Most certainly it is by a listed artist but this one is a mystery...

In some ways the Albert Bierstadt of Europe, Frederick Kammeyer ( 1873 - 1941 ) painted grand lavish landscapes of Europe's beautiful mountain scenes. The oil on linen offered here renders a rapid stream coursing through a wooded valley against the backdrop of majestic imposing mountains in the background but never out of view. A skilled pencil drawing of decorative towers of a church or mosque complex, next to a river, apparently in a milder climate location (see palm trees), signed at lower right "STOLZE". The towers, which somewhat resemble those fantasy towers of St. Basil's in Moscow, seem to be part of a mosque complex, as tiny crescent moons appear to be affixed at the tops of the towers...

Tavik F. Simon 1877-1942 Czech This is an original soft ground etching and aquatint by Austrian artist Tavik F. Simon. The scene is: The Kiosks on the Grand Boulevards, in Paris. This etching was created and printed in 1926 in an edition of 200, published by G. Petit, Paris. The image appears in the Novak catalog as image number N.123. The image measures 13 3/4X16 3/4 inches. This etching is in the early frame with french matting. Pencil signed lower right and numbered 6 of the edition

Charming small round painting in the original gold wood frame, 9 1/2" diameter as framed, the subject given on the reverse of the board in the artist's own handwriting: "Heilige Nacht in Villingen" ("Holy Night in Villingen"), also, "N. gem. v. Albert Sager" ("painted/executed by Albert Sager") signed there including the artist's most unusual monogram which includes the date of execution, 1922. That monogram is also incised carefully in the wet paint on the front side at right...

‏Oil on canvas painting of snowy high mountain framed by a lake and trees, unusually large size for the artist's works at 20" by 36" (24 1/2" by 40 1/2" framed). Although unsigned (and Detreville's output frequently WAS unsigned), the handling, subject matter and color palette almost certainly suggest the hand of the noted California painter. I have owned and sold other unsigned paintings as being by Detreville, and I will stand by this one being by him as well...

By the hand of the noted Polish-born Jewish artist who spent most of his life in California, BERNARD BARUCH ZAKHEIM (1896-1985) is this very early (1929) watercolor study "Mural Design for Monterey Calif". We see an image of a number of figures evidently hard at work in a landscape (possibly harvesting). The watercolor, 11 1/2" by 12" and 14" by 15 1/2" framed, dates to less than a decade after the artist arrived in California...

This subject is likely famed dancer Isadora Duncan, to whom Walkowitz was introduced in Paris around 1920. He executed it is estimated some 5,000 drawings and watercolors of her, as he was fascinated with the fluidity of her movement and never tired of trying to capture it...

Oil on wood panel still life painting of ceramic vessels, plate, kettle, and candlestick, all arranged on a tabletop, apparently unsigned, but on the reverse of the panel is a "Royal Exhibition" 1930 label, and there is a James Bourlet shipping label as well. The work measures 20" by 24" (27 1/2" by 31 1/2" framed). This beautifully impressionistic work is likely by a listed artist but I am stymied by the lack of a signature. Perhaps more research will turn up the identity of the talented art...

Hermine David 1886-1970 French This is a fine original oil on canvas by French artist Hermine David 1886-1970. The subject is a group of strollers in Luxembourg Gardens, Paris. This painting done circa 1930 is signed lower right and measures 18 1/8X15 inches. Housed in a custom French style frame. Hermine was one of the Ecole de Paris artists. In 1918 she married Jules Pascin. Their association seems to have been an influence on the artwork of both artists.
