This note discusses print 76-26, which Daniel Tretiak called "Maki’s little green Leisure Time."

A winter scene print by noted watercolorist and illustrator, Howard Watson. Watson was the "Artist in Residence" at the White House during the Carter Administration.There are tiny thumbtack punctures at the very end corners of the print(not impacting the print and not visible). Professionally framed, the print measures approximately 23" x 20" (probably larger but not measured out of frame). The frame itself is 28-1/2" x 25".

A framed woodblock print by the hand of one of the masters of 20th century Japanese printmaking, 8 1/2" by 11 1/4" inside the existing mat, 15" by 18" framed, signed in pencil by the artist at lower right and numbered 43/120 at lower left margin in pencil. The image is of a nighttime snowfall in front of a traditional Japanese structure. Sekino was creating art before age 20. He knew Shiko Munakata, the famous printmaker, while still young, as they were from the same area...

Poem 70-19 is one of the fairly small group of deep blue prints that Maki made. This one is 5.75 in W x 8.5in H and created in 1970. It is in good condition, with some toning due to its once having been framed.

Original offset lithograph poster for the Tate Gallery, London, 1980 exhibition "Travels with Pen, Pencil and Ink, Drawings and Prints 1961-1979". The exhibition took place from July 2 through August 3, 1980, when Hockney would have been in only his early forties. This poster is very clean and fresh, and attractively framed in brushed silvery metal. There is a little even vertical rumpling of the paper----just enough to prove its earned vintage status at roughly forty years of age...

Poem 72-47 (road) 32 X 21.5 inches textured paper The sun is the inner part of the kanji for road. This is a very big and stunning Maki print It was done in 1972 at the height of his artistic powers. It depicts the kanji for Road or Way, e.g.the Way of Taoism (Daoism). As if done with a brush, the character whooshes across the well-textured paper. At the middle of the print, Maki has added a White Sun.

This is a rather unusual and visually arresting contemporary work by a Japanese or Japanese-American artist, signed at top right "Yasushi Saito" and dated there '78. An oil on canvas, unframed, measuring 23" by 19", the work is difficult to describe: a carp-like blue fish at right center appears with conical mountains that resemble Mount Fuji or desert peaks, as stunted bizarre vegetation, possibly trees, complete the visual feast...

The dramatic Poem 70-37 is the kanji for Self已. It measures 17.5in W x 24in H and is in very good condition.(There is slight toning in the margins.)

W.T. Carlsen Danish born Canadian Artist who work in Canada and Scandinavia. Known for his rich harbor scenes. This work dates from the 1970s and is done from his memory of Denmark. Japanese limited edition sosaku hanga “kappa-ban” (stencil print) by Yoshitoshi Mori (1898-1992) titled “Onna Joruri” features a female performer singing traditional narrative music to the accompaniment of a shamisen. The print is pencil-signed “Y. Mori” at the lower left, with the artist’s red seal above. It is dated ’73 and numbered 56/70. The lower edge of the paper also contains the title and the original purchase price of 70,000 yen...

Haku Maki Poem 71 92 - was done in 1971, one of the four years in which Maki did over 100 different prints. In 1971 he did about 5 Big prints – at least two sides are over 30 inches. In his total oeuvre he did 20+ big ones but only one Yellow This is it. It seems to be a single yellow stroke piercing the black; it is also the kanji for Mind in Maki’s mind...

Poem 71-76 is a yellow-gold print with a bit of a paisley influence. It is number 28 of an edition of 154. Created in 1971, it measures 13in wide x 19.5in high. It is in very good condition. There is tape residue on the back but the front is perfect. .

Haku Maki was undoubtedly Japan’s most prolific print maker of the second half of the 20th century. Many of his works were serious works of kanji and also ceramics. These three are perhaps a bit frivolous. They are actually pretty: each one has seeming globs of color The blue one on the left has kanji in the blue stone; the central one has a wonderful black kanji for Mountain in the center; and the one on the right four globs, each of a different color. And one splash.

A rare print by surrealist print maker Ozaku Seishi, professor emeritus from Tama Art University. In 1970 quite suddenly Haku Maki started producing truly large prints. They were dramatic and somewhat unexpected, all at least 24in x 24in and extended in size to 35in x 35in. His huge print of a woman is 36in x 72in. All of these were created in 1970. Then no Big ones until Big Mu done in 1973. Then no more huge ones. What happened to Maki? What happened to the supply of paper? This Poem 70-10 is pretty large--17.5in W x 24.5in H--but it was succeeded by others even larger.
