Original oil (50" x 40") by Bertha Ballou (American/ 1891-1978). Bertha Ballou studied at the ASL, the Boston School of Fine Art and in Florence. She settled in Spokane, WA. She is the daughter of Colonel C. Ballou, who was commandant at Fort George Wright in the 20's, and the painting is a portrait of Kitty, daughter of Colonel and Mrs. Marshall Candee, also of Fort George Wright (where the painting was purchased--at that time it was still Fort Wright College)...

Scarce 1941 color lithograph print titled in the lower left margin "Babes in the wood" and facsimile signature in right margin by the noted California artist CONRAD BUFF (1886-1975). These prints are sometimes found with pencil signatures, and many were issued in small editions generally under 200 examples. I cannot be certain as to the edition size of this particular title...
Finely executed pastel on paper drawing of bridges spanning a major river, presumably the Rhein in Germany, 11 1/2" by 15 1/2" (15 1/2" by 19 1/2" as framed), signed at lower left by listed German artist RUDOLF MULLER-GERHARDT (1873-1962) (and sometimes spelled as GERHARD). Though listed the artist is apparently not well known...
Jean Louis Forain, French, 1852-1931, etching, "Le Christ Portant Sa Croix" (4e Planche), image size: 11 1/2 x 15 1/8 inches, first state, (Faxon 116) pencil signed l.r.
An unsigned watercolor painting of three fish very artistically arranged in a triangular pattern on a simple slab, the background neutral and undefined, measurements 15 3/4" by 12 1/2" (17 1/2" by 14 1/2" framed in wood with an intentional blanched distressed finish). The work could conceivably date to the 1940's or 1950's and the quality of the imagery certainly suggests the hand of a trained or listed artist. The older paper is laid down on a modern day white board. Condition is excellent.

This is a fine pastel of a pair of dogs---Labradors possibly---(I welcome input from dog lovers)--one named at bottom "Lozi", the other, "Pamuzi", the drawing signed at lower left with what appears as "Janaa Olsen" or "Janaa Owen" or similar, and dated there 1988. It appears to be a portrait commissioned by an owner who was obviously very attached to these particular canines, who appear at this time to have been in the prime of their lives...
A beautiful circa 1920 impressionist painting of tall pines or cedars in a sun-dappled forest landscape which includes two groups of small figures at center left. The unframed work measures 30" by 24" and is apparently unsigned. Judging from the canvas and stretcher, this is likely the work of a listed American artist. It has been suggested that it was cut down at some point, as the painting extends over the tacking edge. The work as found was loose on the stretcher and separating at the edg...

An ORIGINAL mixed media color caricature drawing of iconic entertainer Madonna, 6 1/4" by 8 1/2" (11" by 13" in present silvery framing), signed at lower right by the obviously highly talented contemporary artist who goes by the fashionably anonymous moniker "14". The work is in pencil, gouache, and color crayon. Madonna is shown with colored blonde hair that extends out quite too far on both sides, and there is the suggestion of her being less-than-young. The artist is associated with the we...

Because that species of cactus grows naturally only in Arizona, we can assume that this is indeed an Arizona scene. The painting's style is typical of that of an obscure painter by the name Robert Six, whose works I have seen from time to time in...
A circa 1990's signed oil on canvas painting of a coastal scene, 8" by 15", approximately 15" by 22" framed, signed lower left by acclaimed contemporary California artist RITA HOFFMAN SHULAK (1947-). I contacted the artist online, and she was kind enough to respond that this was her work, a not completed painting, probably of the La Jolla rocks in San Diego. She said that the work is from a period when she was experimenting with "washes". Shulak was born in Iowa and studied at Ohio State and ...

Modernist still life of wine bottle, coffee pot, pan, flagon and other objects on a table top, arranged artistically and painted with a cubist feeling, unsigned, framed in strip framing, no glass, circa mid 20th century. This is a fine original color aquatint etching by French artist Manuel Robbe. The title of this work is: La Coquette. It was created and printed circa 1905. It is hand signed with pen and ink in the lower right border. Printed on a medium weight laid type paper. The image measures 14 1/8X10 3/16 inches. A totally charming miniature painting of a child, done in watercolor on natural material, and housed in an elaborately molded 15K gold case and surround. The cute sitter is in a white gown and posed against a cloud-filled blue sky, with foliage and a tree to the right. The reverse of the case is glazed, with a lock of hair in the aperture, and a pin so that the miniature can be worn as a brooch.
The condition of this lovely example is excellent. Sight size is 2 1/4" by 2 1/8" and the case size...
Pastel or oil pastel on velvet landscape of the Philippines, the sun setting dramatically over a distant peak, a traditional thatched house at right, signed at lower left "Igning Sarmiento Manila 68". There is a known Sarmiento artist in the Philippines but I am not sure that this is by that artist. The size is 17 1/2" by 24" on the stretchers and 20" by 26" framed. The handling of the color in the sky as the sun disappears and night comes on is exquisite. Condition is excellent, no damage n...
A truly beautiful pair of miniature portraits, on natural wafer, exemplifying Hugh Bridport at his very best. Signed on the back of the boy,, in graphite, "Painted by Hugh Bridport, Phila".
The very handsome gentleman is wearing a black ascot, white collar, white shirt with onyx studs, and a black jacket. The young boy, with fine, light brown hair, is wearing a sky blue garment with white embroidery on the wide collar.
Both miniatures are in superb condition, with no cracks, chips, or bowing...
Contemporary (late 20th century) oil on canvas painting of a lighthouse, and coastal rocks and sea birds, a tall ship at right, signed at lower left by American gallery artist CRAIG SMITH. The work measures 24" by 30" (31" by 37" framed). The scene resembles Portland, Maine's famous lighthouse, but a business card of the artist affixed to the reverse appears to say that this is a Nova Scotia, Canada scene. The tall ship flies the flag of Portugal and it has been suggested to me, that it is in...
William Lee Hankey, 1869-1952 British, "Sleeping Child", etching, image size 7 3/4X8 inches, pencil signed, artists blindstamp
Watercolor on paper, unsigned, undated but likely dating from the period 1865 to 1885, 15 3/4" by 11 3/8" inside the mat, (27 1/2" by 22 1/2" as framed, but **frame is currently unaccounted for since photos were taken**), showing two young schoolgirls in the yard of a brick and wood shutters style mid nineteenth century home, such as would be found in Boston's Beacon Hill, or parts of New York City. There is a lot of skill in this drawing, and the artist was likely trained and probably could be...
(**One of two works by the artist in my shop**). Unlike most commonly seen works by this artist, which are actually serigraph prints, this is an original oil on canvas painting, measuring 34" by 18" (unframed). The scene, which could be described as a floral fantasy, incorporating at least two human heads floating within the composition, is rather typical of the work of the artist, HERMANN DIETRICH (1916-2003). Dietrich's online profile has only in recent years become more developed. Born in...

Watercolor and pastel mixed media work on paper, 23 3/4" by 17 1/2" (28" by 21 1/4" framed), the subject a mother and her child in a northern European traditional interior (probably Dutch, judging from the wooden shoes and other details), the work signed at lower left "P. Doering" (PAUL DOERING 1864-1947). The artist is most closely associated with sunny California, to which he emigrated in 1910 from Germany, but his commonly encountered works are of people in humble interiors, going about thei...
A striking portrait miniature, on natural wafer, done by Geibel (signed along left side). Thus far we have not been able to find the artist listed in any of the main directories. The sitter is shown wearing a white stock, waistcoat, and a royal blue jacket.
The condition of the painting is excellent, with no problems at all. Please note that the darker area on the right part of the jacket is due to the difficulty of photographing the painting. In fact, because of the angle of the glass the p...
Born in Marseille, France, Camoin met Henri Matisse in Gustave Moreau's class at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris.[1] Matisse and his friends (including Camoin, Henri Manguin, Albert Marquet, Georges Rouault, André Derain and Maurice de Vlaminck), formed the original group of artists labeled the Fauves (meaning "the wild beasts") for their wild, expressionist-like use of color. Camoin always remained close to Matisse. He painted a portrait of Matisse, which is in the permanent collection of t...

A nicely executed watercolor and gouache painting of Notre Dame Cathedral as seen from the east, the view captured on an atmospheric, cloudy gray day. The scene includes fishermen and other tiny figures at left. At lower right the artist signed rather illegibly; it could possibly read "Pierre" or "Renee", and after that it becomes more difficult to decipher, but "51 PARIS" is at the end (possibly "54"). So we have a view of the famous cathedral created just a handful of years after the end of...
Glenn Pizer, American Modernist Artist known for a brilliant abstract work. The Cityscape In Snow” is oil on canvas measuring 24 x 14“ This work is incredibly reminiscent of the Nabis painters
An oil on canvas, 12" by 16" and 16 1/2" by 20" in dark stained wood frame, featuring a number of women in a colorful tropical village, carrying baskets of tropical fruits (possibly papayas). The artist signed at bottom right "Paul". The work probably dates to the 1970's or 1980's. A colorful addition to any room. Very slight wear on frame and tiny white area in sky is a spot of disturbed paint.
A print of Pierre-Auguste Renoir's 1889 painting "A Young Girl with Daisies", 9 1/2 by 7 1/2" (18" by 16" in the attractive wood frame). The print is very glossy, as made---giving the impression of being on porcelain, or made as an enamel. The frame is likely of Mexican origin and is hand carved and gilded, making for an attractive combination. A work for the Renoir fan who cannot quite afford the real deal at a Sotheby's auction.
A pair of fine lithograph prints on Arches paper, from an edition of 300 examples, signed in the plate, printed in 1966 in Paris by Andre Sauret for Mourlot Freres. The prints are from a set of twelve images that were used as illustrations in the book "Stempeniou" by Cholen Aleikhem. The major Jewish-Ukrainian artist, EMANUEL MANE-KATZ (1894-1962) began working on the project in Geneva in 1958, at which time he created the gouaches on which the prints were later based. He completed the work i...
The work done at probably the Zenith of her portrait period, is somewhat reminiscent of Paul Gauguin’s studies in Tahitian Curture. Ms Lane work is a highly impasto work with incredible lushness. Our gallery is proud to represent this period of her catalog. Anne Lane studied art at George Mason University in Virginia, completed her education at Saint Patrick’s college, Ireland, where she studied theology and philosophy. The tonal and contemplated intensity of her paintings reflect her 10 yea...
A contemporary American painting of a tabby cat next to a vase with flowers, 13 1/2" by 10 3/4" (16" by 13" in white frame), signed at lower right RS and dated there 2008. The artist was a talented amateur but he/she has created an attractive and coordinated scene in black, white, gray and blue. The frame has some smudges that come off with some rubbing and there are a few corner chips.

The print, featuring Kadishman's trademark imagery, of a sheep's head, measures 29 7/8" by 19 3/4". The artist was born in Tel Aviv and by the late 1940's was already studying with sculptors Moshe Sternschluss and Rudi Lehman. In the early 1950's, the young Kadishman lived on a kibbutz, where he was exposed to sheep and shepherding; the experienc...
