Original color lithograph by Jean Charlot (American, born in France). Titled "Mexican Mother" in pencil l.l. Also signed and dated in the plate l.r. and signed in pencil by the artist l.r. Jean Charlot emigrated to Mexico in 1922 where he created woodcuts and lithographs depicting the Mexican people. This work was pulled in Colorado Springs in 1948 with master printer Lawrence Barrett. This one is hard to describe....but I will start somewhere. It is an oil on canvas work, unframed, 24" by 24", with no signature on the front, and only "SARAH W." on the overlap giving any possible indication as to who painted this. A green eye within a triangular window in to a human face stares at the viewer, Magritte-like, as the face of a young black child stares from the lower right corner, as a complex pair of intertwined figures at lower left make for arresting and dream-like imagery...

The framing was done in the Seattle area (see sticker), and putting the style together with that framing information, I feel that perhaps this might be by an artist working in the Mark Tobey school in the Northwest, but this is speculation.
