This is an unframed study in pencil by a noted figure in eastern American art, XANTHUS RUSSELL SMITH (1839-1929). The artist, at age 85, signed it with his distinctive "XS" monogram at lower left, and wrote "Painted in oil this size", and dated it Nov. 29- 1924. The sketchbook paper measures 6 5/8" by 9". This is a good sample of using the natural color of agate to create an interesting snuff bottle. It is 3 inches tall, 1 1/8 inches wide and 1 inch thick. The artist used the orange of the agate to create a large squash and small squash hanging on its side. The black section of the stone color was used to create a lucky bat; the lighter color of the stone served to create a monkey grabbing the smaller squash.
