This is a contemporary work, signed at lower right "Christopher Clarke" and dated there "83". Measuring 11 5/8" by 16 5/8" inside the mat and 19" by 25" as framed, the work reminds of accomplished watercolor painters like Frank Weston Benson, Ogden Pleissner, Chet Reneson, and others who skillfully rendered duck hunters and their prey. This is a surprisingly good kanji It was done in 1972,slightly beyond Haku Maki's core period for such small kanji. It is the character for Mu or Nothing It is a very abstract depiction of the character, more so than most of Maki’s rendering of Nothing, which he did many times. A watercolor painting of pine or cypress trees on the coast, perhaps a place like Carmel or Santa Barbara, measuring 14 3/4" by 18 3/4" (20" by 23 1/2" framed). The work is unsigned, (I have opened it up to peek inside, no writing anywhere) and judging from the framing it could date to the 1970's or 1960's. The artist used quality Arches paper (see blind stamp of same). The painting is clean and problem-free; over the years it has slipped inside its mat so will have to be probably re-affixed.
