A complex mixed media drawing, in the style of Russian artist Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944), featuring geometric shapes and forms, measuring 7 1/2" by 11 3/4" inside the mat opening (17" in 21" in frame). PAIR of gouache paintings of Italy, one apparently showing the island of Ischia in moonlight, at the entrance to the Gulf of Naples, the other a coastal scene of the mainland, neither signed, circa 1900. Eugenia Grant's floral works in pastel are amazing achievements, often leading people to think they are prints. John Winkler, American, 1894-1979, "Standard Fisheries". This 1941 etching by John Winkler measures 13 1/2 x 8 1/4 inches and is pencil signed. Winkler was originally from Austria coming to America at the age 16. After various jobs he impulsively enrolled in the San Francisco Art Institute and soon discovered his talent as an etcher. He became good friends with John Taylor Arms as well as Arthur Heintzelman. His works are found in many major museums throughout the US and Europe.

At first glance this appears to be a 17th century Dutch landscape oil on panel by someone like Ruisdael, Hobbema, Cuyp, Van Goyen, or other famous artists of that time and place. Closer examination reveals that this is actually a late 20th century work in that style, signed at lower right by artist J M GRISWOLD.
