Oil on board painting of a Mediterranean-looking coastline, 6 1/2" by 10 1/4" (11 3/4" by 16" framed), unsigned, the luminous sunshine handled with considerable skill. This needs only a signature to propel it to stardom; it's really a shame that the artist did not affix his or her name. Oil on canvas laid on panel painting of a tropical river with adjacent structures, royal poinciana tree (sometimes known as flame tree or flamboyant), banana trees, and a wood raft in the middle of the river. The piece is signed at lower left. It measures 10" by 14" and 14" by 17 1/2" framed. The scene could be in Asia (Philippines, or Indonesian?), or Latin America, perhaps Brazilian---difficult to determine, but I lean towards Latin America, the signature not appearing Asian. The artist was...

Ink on rice type paper, approximately 13" by 11" inside the mat, the subject appearing to be a child, with a bird above, signed at lower right "Serisawa" in ballpoint, inscribed "To Gertrude & Jim from Sueo" at lower left in ballpoint. This is an example of the artistry of the American-Japanese artist SUEO SERISAWA (1910-2004). Serisawa is considered to be one of the principal figures in California modernism. Born in Yokohama, Japan, the son of an artist, he was in Long Beach, California as a b...

Watercolor on paper, 10 1/8" by 13 1/4" (15" by 18 1/4" as framed), signed at lower left with the distinctive signature of California Scene artist JAKE LEE. This is an image of a white fountain framed by a balustrade and mature trees. Jake Lee's works are increasingly sought after by collectors in the wake of his relatively recent passing. This is a clean example in excellent condition. See the net for more images of his paintings, which include California landscapes, as well as overseas ex...

Pastel on paper colorful abstract pastel drawing, 15 1/2" by 19 1/2" inside the mat, 25 1/2" by 29 1/2" as framed, signed illegibly at lower right. The work is very modern and there's a lot of energy in the dramatic forms. No doubt this was created in the 1980's to maybe just a few years ago. The artist's signature is difficult to make out. Photographs were taken through non-glare glass, so I have digitally enhanced them to show the color that exists below the cloudy type glass, which shoul...

This is another of Haku Maki’s depictions of the kanji天 for day, heaven, sky. It’s a fairly easy character to make stark and lovely. The next year, 1971, he did another black-and-white dramatic rendering of the same kanji (Poem 71-51, which is below at #1452042 (stock #1077). The print is 12in square and in excellent condition.
