By noted South African artist, Otto Klar (born in Austria, 1908-1994), this drawing depicts a group of huts, some figures, and hills in the background. In a simple wood frame, it measures 10 3/4" by 12 5/8" (sight size 6" by 8"), and is inscribed on the back, "Christmas South Africa, 1977, Gift from Otto Klar, Dec 2nd". In pencil, on buff colored paper, frame and double matting are clearly original, and the drawing appears to be in excellent condition...
Fernand Leger, French,1881-1955. This stunning example of Fernand Leger's imagery at his peak period in the 1920's is graphite and gouache on paper. It is 34.5cm h by 25cm w in a beautiful frame 55cm h by 45cm w. It is signed lower right F. L. 22 and inscribed "A mon cher Ami Albert Fratellini cordialement F Leger". There is some wear on the edges of the paper as can be seen but no damage to the image...
Original pencil drawing a portrait of a man by Balthasar Klossowski de Rola, signed monogram lower right. Best known as Balthus, a French painter in the second half of the 20th century, famous for his somewhat disturbing paintings of pubescent girls and for his association with some of the greats in modern art, including Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dali...
Original French master portrait of a woman wearing braids from a portfolio of drawings dated 1847. Displayed in a giltwood frame.
Drawing on paper executed in soft pencil, 7" by 8 1/4", essentially unframed (in a protective frame only), the subject an arid desert landscape butte under a crescent moon, the drawing signed at lower left "ARCH SINCLAIR". There is a listing for an Archie Sinclair (1895-), a student of Henry Keller. Sinclair is listed in many reference works. He is said to be associated with Oregon, so, this might be a scene from the dry eastern part of that state. Evidently he worked in the east as well...
Drawing on paper, 6 1/2" by 9 1/4" the scene only, 9 1/2" by 12 1/2" as framed, signed at lower right, followed by "fec. 1818" (abbreviation of the Latin word "fecit", meaning "executed", in that year). Try as I might, I cannot make out the name. I've tried Pfohl, Pfahl, Pigott, and so on. In any event, here's a drawing that has survived in excellent condition after nearly 200 years...
Pencil drawing on heavy paper of a happy chef draped over a chair and holding a lobster and corn or celery, 14 1/2" by 11 1/4", signed at lower right by listed California artist DUVAL ELIOT (1909-1990). Her biography appears in askart and in Hughes' dictionary of California artists. Eliot was Arkansas-born, and was in California as a child. She worked in a number of media, including printmaking, sculpture, and painting...
Beautifully executed drawing in soft pencil, 8 1/2" by 11 1/2" sheet, 6 1/2" by 9 1/2" inside the rectangular border drawn by the artist, and 10 1/4" by 13 5/8" as framed, signed at lower right "Davis F. Schwartz", showing a copse of trees in a hilly landscape. This drawing, which reminds of works by Ralph Holmes or Maynard Dixon, is nicely framed in a 1930's or 1940's frame. Schwartz (1879-1969) has a sizable listing in Hughes' "Artists in California 1786-1940"...
By the internationally famous English 20th century fashion photographer, artist, interior/stage/costume designer, tastemaker, and socialite, CECIL BEATON (1904-1980), this is an original pencil drawing of a nude woman, the sheet measuring 12 1/4" by 9 5/8" (16 1/2" by 14 1/2" in contemporary simple light wood frame)...
Pencil on watermarked paper drawing of a tall female nude, 16" by 11 1/4" inside the mat, 23 1/4" by 18 3/4" framed, signed at lower right by the artist and dated there 1933. DAME ETHEL WALKER (1861-1951) is a modern British artist of significance, known for an impressionistic and poetic style with subject matter ranging from portraits and studies of the female figure to seascapes, landscapes, still life florals, and decorative compositions featuring mythological and allegorical material. She ...
This is a study in pencil by FERNAND LUNGREN (1859-1932) for an oil landscape of arid desert mountains of the American west. It measures 8" by 10 1/2". There's a mat but the work is not framed. This is a subtle work that is best viewed in person; it's very, very hard to photograph. The artist has made notations like "shaddow" (spelled like that), "all golden in warm sun", and "warm rosy gray".........showing the creative process. It would be interesting to locate the final oil with which th...
Pencil drawing on paper by the important Russian-American artist DAVID BURLIUK (1882-1967), purchased out of a Berkshires estate in Massachusetts. The drawing measures 14 1/2" by 8 3/4" (21" by 14" framed), the lady in soft pencil and the ear study at right in blue colored pencil. It's signed and dated at lower right 27 April 1946, and is evidently after a work (perhaps an etching) by the famous German artist of the 16th century, Albrecht Durer, as Burliuk wrote "(Durer)" between the signatur...
A quite old pencil drawing on thin card, 8 1/2" by 5 1/2" inside the mat, 13" by 10 1/4" framed (no glass), apparently by a "Grandmother Stevenson" according to a notation on the reverse side of framing materials. Very faint, at the bottom of the reverse side of the card, in 19th century handwriting, is written: "All that is nature most I love, all the beautiful picture painted by the hand of Him who rests above"/Grandmother Stevenson." This phrase is written again in modern handwriting on th...
Pencil on paper drawing of a southern-style house with large tree and foreground dog, dated 1967 lower right, 5" by 6 3/4", 13" by 15" framed, by the well listed Louisiana artist ROLLAND HARVE GOLDEN (1931-2019). The dog resembles an ancient breed of dog, such as would be seen in a museum of Egyptian sculptural antiquities--perhaps, the pet of a pharaoh. The juxtaposition of the dog in front of the typical and familiar southern architecture is in keeping with Golden's self-described "borderlin...
A small pencil sketch on irregularly shaped scratch paper, roughly 4 1/4" by 4" (5 1/2" square in its simple wood frame from which it was removed for photography). The subject is an empty vase casting a shadow while resting on a narrow tabletop. Of possibly great interest to any researcher of the artist's life and career, the work is clearly a sketch, perhaps for a finished painting or pastel. On the reverse side, and to a lesser extent at lower right on the front, are columns of numbers and ...
