This work is guaranteed to be an original pencil drawing, and not a print nor reproduction of any kind. The drawing (15" by 23", 20" by 26 3/4" in simple metal framing) is amazingly detailed, featuring an old time steam boat, the General Slocum, as it might have appeared in New York harbor around the turn of the century. The Brooklyn Bridge towers at right and sailing craft complete the scene at lower right. The artist signed the work at lower left and dated it 1995...

The paper is browned with age, though, evenly, and there's a small crown-shaped stain that looks like an ink blot, irregularly shaped, at lower right. The work is affixed to a board on which is written in old hand "No. 20"...

Henri George Keller was a very influential American artist (he counted among his students Charles Burchfield, Paul Travis, and Frank Wilcox.) He is listed in all the usual databases...

Original ink drawing on brown paper circa 1921 by Isidor Ascheim (German-born Israeli artist, 1891-1968). Well framed. Signed l.r. Also identified by two labels from Denenberg Fine Art, Boston, verso. 17" by 13" work alone, 20" by 16" in frame. Isidor Ascheim is an important Israeli artist who studied in Breslau with Otto Mueller and Fryederyk Pautsch. He emigrated to Israel in 1939. His works are in the collections of a number of museums.

A very antique unsigned red chalk drawing on laid paper, late 17th or early 18th century, measuring 9 7/8" by 7 1/2" (25 cm. by 19 cm.), 15 1/2" by 12 1/2" as framed, proclaimed at bottom in neat professional hand lettering, on the mat, to be by the Italian master Guercino (1592-1666). The old master drawings expert of a major auction house did not believe this to be by Guercino, and suggested Lanfranco or Albani as possible directions to pursue...

On the back of the drawing in pencil are various writings including, “Van de Velde” in the upper left corner. Though the writing is considerably later than the drawing it is a solid attribution to the Van de Velde family of painters...
