One of dozens of drawings by this artist that I recently acquired, (ask to see others, not shown in my shop), this is a fine image in charcoal on paper, 13 3/4" by 16 1/2" as inexpensively framed without mat, signed at lower right by California and Massachusetts listed artist DAISY MARGUERITE HUGHES (1882-1968). Hughes was born and died in Los Angeles but in between she spent much time in the Provincetown art colony on Cape Cod...

Black ink on paper still life including wine bottle, Asian pot in foreground, potted plant and objects on a distant table, 17 1/4" by 11 1/4" (25" by 19" as framed), signed at lower right by well listed artist WAYNE LA COM (1922-). The economy of draftsmanship in this ink drawing reminds of the skilled pen technique of Henri Matisse and his famous nudes. La Com is known for his skilled watercolors in the 20th century California Scene style...

This is a fascinating drawing, in that it appears to be a photograph, such as a rotogravure print........but, it is not. It is guaranteed unconditionally to be an original watercolor, ink and gouache drawing of an old portal, possibly the entry to a church. The door seems to have been a favorite motif for generations of German and traveling artists.....a favorite "motif" just like the iconic red fishing shack in Rockport, Massachusetts, or the Brulatour Courtyard in New Orleans...

A whimsical drawing of a young child-like chimpanzee seated in a parlor, evidently enjoying a cocktail, a tea kettle in the foreground suggesting that he is about to partake in other civilized human behavior. The drawing is unsigned. I researched a bit on the net to see if it might be by the artists who created Curious George, (Hans-Augusto Rey(Reyersbach) and Margret Rey), but the obvious lack of resemblance to that most famous cartoon ape indicates that this drawing is not of him...

India ink on card drawing of a Spanish-California style home, the card 8" by 13 1/2", (plus surrounding simple mat, no glass/frame, hinged at top edge inside the mat), signed on reverse and dated mid-1922, by listed artist CHARLES VOORHIES (1901-1970). Note the 1922 rubber stamps on the back showing this was created at the University of California Architectural Dept., (Berkeley), in that year, while the artist was just a student. Ink on paper drawing of the narrow streets of an old town likely in eastern Massachusetts, possibly Marblehead, two women chatting casually, the work signed by the artist at lower right and monogrammed and dated in Roman numerals 1896 at left, by the noted American artist and illustrator EDMUND HENRY GARRETT (1853-1929). Garrett was born in Albany, New York at mid century, and died near Boston at the end of the 1920's...

Pencil on paper drawing of two men who appear to be having a serious disagreement, the top hatted figure at left about to swing his cane into the other, all while a woman in bonnet watches from rear left in horror. It's a whimsical, humorous piece, measuring 8 3/4" by 7 1/4" inside the mat, 16" by 15" framed. The paper is very thin and delicate, and has acquired a few noticeable folds and creases in its more than 150 years, as shown. The paper is NOT laid down...

This is a sweet, beautiful little drawing by an artist who seems to have created mostly coastal landscapes in oil, especially along the English Channel or around the Channel Islands of Guernsey and Jersey. Mason Wells American 1906-1984 large watercolor on paper of a figure of a woman walking on the deck of a passenger liner with the funnel and other parts of the vessel. Painted over pencil. On the back is written, “MASON WELLS/ maybe/ S.S. Berengaria/ when Student at/ Harvard.” Sight size 20 ¾ by 13 ¾ inches. Frame 28 by 20 ¾ inches.

Condition. Excellent. Frame has minor knocks. New acid free backing.

Pencil on paper drawing of a young man, in true 1930's American Scene style. The work measures 12 1/4" by 9 1/2" inside the present mat, the full sheet extending under the mat (some of the drawing is hidden by present mat) 14 1/2" by 11 3/8". The work is unsigned. I would imagine that the artist would be someone listed, judging from the quality and sensitivity of the portrait. The paper has yellowed with time, and the area under the present mat is a different shade from the exposed area, so ...
