Three drawings in pencil on gray-blue paper, each 7 1/2" by 12" approximately inside the mat, all of coastal scenes with multiple figures, sailing ships and even dogs and donkeys. Two are signed with the "W C" initials and are dated Nov. 1866; the third one with conjoined initials is titled "Falmouth" (a city in Cornwall, on the southwest coast of England) and is dated 12 June 1867...

An ORIGINAL drawing of a mid-19th century gentleman, 8 1/2" by 5 7/8" (16" by 13 1/2" framed), signed at lower right by the well-listed French-born artist, etcher and sculptor, ALPHONSE LEGROS (1837-1911). The drawing is primarily in soft pencil, with some watercolor in the suggestion of a chair, and some faint red in the face area. Legros was born in Dijon in eastern France. He was in Paris while still young, exposed to the art world there...

Drawing, I believe in charcoal, 12 3/4" by 18 1/2" inside the matting, framed, but no glass, signed at lower left "M. Moss" and dated "March '93", the subject a large wooden house on a lake surrounded by mountains, small boats tied up in front. I think this is American but I suppose it could also be English; I'm undecided..........though, the framing suggests would make me lean towards American, as the reverse was backed by the typically American wood slats with knotholes...

A finely worked sepia ink drawing of a Paris street scene, titled at top "Eglise et Seminaire St. Nicolas du Chardonnet", signed at lower right "Delaunay" and dated there 1867. The 6 1/2" by 7 1/2" drawing (11" by 13 1/4" as framed) features a Roman Catholic church in the fifth Arrondissement, on the south bank of the Seine, sometimes known as the Latin Quarter. The Pantheon and Sorbonne are located in this district, south of Notre Dame...

Sepia ink on paper drawing, 5 3/4" by 3 3/4" inside a red mat opening, 11" by 8 1/2" as framed, signed at lower left and dated there 1864, by listed English woman artist SARAH LOUISA KILPACK (1840-1909). This is a sweet, beautiful little drawing by an artist who seems to have created mostly coastal landscapes in oil, especially along the English Channel or around the Channel Islands of Guernsey and Jersey. This would be an early work created when she would have been in only her mid 20's...

Fine early pencil drawing on wove paper, the subject a distant view of Windsor Castle and the Thames River (favorite subject of so many, many artists), signed at lower right "James M. Hart" and dated there 1855. This is a rather early work of JAMES MACDOUGAL HART (1828-1901) of later Hudson River School fame. Hart's major large scale landscape paintings have reached into six figures at auction, and sales in the tens of thousands are not unusual...

A pencil drawing (and touches of white gouache) of the scenery with figures in a small rowboat, around the northeastern end of New York State's Lake George, notably the prominent "Anthony's Nose" feature, dated 1840 at lower right and titled there "L. George". There is no artist signature. This is an exceptionally early work and it would be interesting to know the identity of the artist...

This is an exceptionally early, student work by the ultimately famous and important American-born artist who lived much of his life in Europe. The scene is of a group of fashionably dressed people listening to the guide at left, inside one of Florence's art museums, probably the Uffizi Gallery, the walls hung with pictures, a copyist at his easel, and other tourists gawking at right. The drawing is ink on paper laid on board, and is signed at lower right "Cucuel" and dated there "99"...

A most unusual and interesting DOUBLE-SIDED pencil drawing on wove paper, one side featuring an indian in headdress snatching a child off the shore, a tiny fenced white settlement visible in the upper left corner; the other side features a white man in frontier clothing holding his rifle as a native brave swings his tomahawk. Both sides are signed "E Thompson artist". I am not aware of a known artist by this name so this will rest squarely in the folk art or historical categories...

Pencil drawing on paper, 4 1/4" square inside the mat, 9 1/4" by 9 1/4" as framed, signed at lower right "Luce", the subject an elderly man at left and elderly woman at right, both reading a letter or periodical. The paper is browned with age, though, evenly, and there's a small crown-shaped stain that looks like an ink blot, irregularly shaped, at lower right. The work is affixed to a board on which is written in old hand "No. 20". The mat, with its hand-drawn border, seems to be glued down ...
