Fernand Leger, French,1881-1955.Fernand Léger was born in 1881, the same year both Picasso and Braque were born, in Normandy; his father was a substantial cattle grazer.

A PAIR of detailed ink drawings, one titled "The Cottage", featuring a tidy home in the English countryside, the other a dated 1911 detailed look at a Gothic church's walls and entrance portal. Affixed to the crumbling old backing is a label for "The Cottage", showing it apparently won the "John J. Burnet Prize" for Alex Nicolson, who was evidently a student in "Club No. 129". So Nicolson was evidently a talented young artist...

Original very fine, detailed pencil drawing on paper of a seated middle aged gentleman (**NOT A PRINT**!!!!), 17 1/2" by 11" (approximately 25 1/2" by 19" as framed), signed at lower right "K. de Groot", not dated but likely late 19th century. It is hard to believe that this is not a print, the work is so fine and accomplished. Strangely, I can find no artist listing under that name...

Charcoal drawing on paper laid on thin board, 28" by 38", unframed, signed at lower right "McBride". I am not familiar with the apparently unlisted artist might be but he or she was talented and possibly familiar with the San Francisco School/California School, Northern California School of art---artists like David Park, Nathan Oliveira, Elmer Bischoff and Manuel Neri. The haunting face especially reminds me of some of these esteemed artists' works...

Hoff" and on the backing is written apparently in artist's handwriting "MARGO HOFF/THREE ROOFS/CRAYON DRAWING". Margo Hoff was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1910. By 1934 she was in Chicago where she received training at the Art Institute. Before the war she was able to travel extensively in Europe...

The authorship is not obvious: either Antoine-Khan Sevruguin (1840-1933) a pioneer of photography in the late 19th century Persia or his son André "Darvish" Sevrugian, who studied painting in Paris. Signed pencil drawing of a man, from mid-chest up, signed at lower right somewhat indecipherably---the name looks like "Inda (Linda?) Turtle" but that is likely not the actual name. The piece measures 13 1/4" by 10 1/2" inside the mat and 21 1/2" by 18 1/8" framed. Condition appears to be excellent. Allow for reflections especially at top in some of the images.

Original unframed drawing on old Brownie art board, in ink and marker with hint of pencil underneath in a few spots, each box measuring 2 15/16" by 3 1/2", dated "3-20" and signed at far right "Schulz". Also appearing is "(COPY) NOT FOR REPRODUCTION" and the name "j. f. bufton" on the bench next to the bat. Believing that the work could possibly be an authentic work by Schulz, I have researched the drawing through the Charles Schulz Museum in Santa Rosa, California...

A well-drawn pencil scene of the French coast of western Brittany, titled on reverse "Pecheurs a Douarnenez", signed at lower right by living French artist BRUNO DU TERTRE D'ELMARCQ. Douarnenez is one of the scenic towns much favored by artists since the 19th century. When I first saw this work I was reminded of the beach scenes of Eugene Boudin, the famed late 19th century French artist. The tiny figures, sails, and poetry all remind of that French master...

He studied with Thomas Pollock Anshutz, Hugh Breckenridge, Henry McCarter, Cecilia Beaux, and William Merritt Chase. In 1907 he traveled to France where he remained until 1910...

A refined old drawing titled "Caterskill Clove" dated Oct. 7, 1859, the subject a famed rocky gorge in the eastern part of the Catskill mountains of New York State (google "Catskill Clove" for full information on this renowned scenic area). The work is apparently unsigned. There are any number of listed artists of the Hudson River School who could have created the drawing; Sanford Robinson Gifford, William Hart, Asher Durand and many others of note painted in the area...

A charming, signed, pastel portrait by Dorothy Colles (1917-2003) who was (according to an obituary published in the Independent newspaper) "gifted in portraits of children". This picture was drawn circa 1963 (please see our other Colles picture) and was a commissioned piece for an advertising poster.
