By the well regarded Belgian artist JACQUES HOTE (1939-1986), this is a highly worked, detailed ink drawing on Japan tissue-type paper, measuring 8 1/2" by 11 1/4" (13 1/2" by 15 1/2" simply framed, no glass). The work is signed at lower right and dated there March 22,1969. The figures, caricatures, really, are quite strange, many with exaggerated Gallic noses; the subject/message of the drawing is not clear to me, but it likely lies in the realm of politics and satire and social commentary...

Pencil on paper study of a man, signed at lower left with initials M.A.K., mid 19th century, by the noted Dutch landscapist and member of the important artistic Koekkoek family, MARINUS ADRIANUS KOEKKOEK (1807-1870). He was the son of Johannes Hermanus Koekkoek and brother of Barend Cornelis and Hermanus Koekkoek. This particular work was likely a sketch made by the artist as he worked out a particular artistic situation for a painting...

An elegant, black ink on white paper drawing of the heart of Montmartre in Paris, the famous Place du Tertre, where to this day artists endure ten year waiting lists to secure a spot outdoors to create the works tourists love to buy. This beautiful drawing is signed at lower right with what appears as "Dieter Gly(xx)" and is dated there 1958. It is in excellent condition, considering it is over sixty years old. Simply framed in black strip, it is ready for the wall...

Ink on paper, double-sided drawing of cowboys and their horses, 7 7/8" by 10 1/4" inside the present mat (13" by 16" as framed), unsigned, but acquired in Yucca Valley from close friends of the artist who obtained much of his work after his 2005 passing. This is a vigorous and spontaneous work by an obviously very talented artist of the American west. Colt's works have been sold at Bonhams auctions of California art, and Santa Fe dealers offer his work alongside the best of western artists...

Original unframed drawing on old Brownie art board, in ink and marker with hint of pencil underneath in a few spots, each box measuring 2 15/16" by 3 1/2", dated "3-20" and signed at far right "Schulz". Also appearing is "(COPY) NOT FOR REPRODUCTION" and the name "j. f. bufton" on the bench next to the bat. Believing that the work could possibly be an authentic work by Schulz, I have researched the drawing through the Charles Schulz Museum in Santa Rosa, California...

**ONE OF SEVERAL WORKS BY THE ARTIST IN MY SHOP, all acquired at the same time and place**, this is a pencil drawing on paper, 11 1/4" by 9" as framed, signed at lower left with the initials H.L. and dated there "62". HARRY LIEBERMAN (1876-1983) was a Polish-born, long-lived artist who didn't begin his artistic career until late in life...

Dark brown ink drawing on paper, 11 3/4" by 18", unframed, signed at lower right "John Floyd Morris", titled ISCHIA NAPOLI. The artist is well listed, and is associated with California and the east coast, with askart noting exhibitions in Chicago and Palm Beach. He is perhaps best known for his modern and surrealistic paintings, but painted a wide range of subject matter, including clowns. Interestingly, a big collector of his work seems to have been none other than Noel Coward...

A pencil drawing (and touches of white gouache) of the scenery with figures in a small rowboat, around the northeastern end of New York State's Lake George, notably the prominent "Anthony's Nose" feature, dated 1840 at lower right and titled there "L. George". There is no artist signature. This is an exceptionally early work and it would be interesting to know the identity of the artist...

Drawing (charcoal) of Donald Duck, signed "Roy", and with "HI HENRY" at top, the work, the sheet 9 3/4" by 6", presently simply framed for protection only. The drawing is by ROY WILLIAMS (1907-1976, who was inducted as a "Disney legend" posthumously in 1992. He was a Disney animator, who worked as director, producer, storyboard and layout artist. Significantly, he was also a Disney entertainer, perhaps best known as "Big Roy" the adult Mouseketeer on the Mickey Mouse Club tv series...

PAIR OF signed ink drawings with pencil underneath, each 7 1/2" by 6 1/2" and 13 1/2" by 11 1/2" as identically framed, the subjects famous clipper ships of the 19th century "Gamecock" and "Cutty Sark", each bearing a signature at lower right that could be interpreted as a "G" inside a square. Found in Maine, and said to have come from a Kennebunkport home, the artist who created the drawings might remain a mystery...

A nice watercolor portrait of a young man, probably in his mid-teens, signed, “Elinor M. Barnard/1933.” The young man with brown hair and eyes wearing an open necked white shirt leans into the picture plane with a sense of youthful eagerness. Elinor Barnard (1872-1942) was born and studied in the UK, but worked mostly in the USA, principally New York City...

A well-executed watercolor of a tightly grouped bouquet of flowers. This may be a theorem made with stencils, though this painting looks as if it was done freehand. Theorems were more often stenciled on velvet. The style is of the mid-19th century. It could be either American or English. The frame is a good one of that period. The painting was almost certainly in an oval frame originally and the slight shadow around it is evidence of that frame. The sight size is 12 3/8 x 15 ½ inches with the ...

Circa 18th century ink on paper European drawing, 11 1/4" by 16 1/2" inside the inner framing enclosure, 24 1/2" by 29 1/2" as framed, the subject a coastal village with small boat landing, the tiny figures going about their lives on shore and in the boats, and a classic old sailing ship just making it into the image at left, signed in the lower left corner "Jac. A__". The drawing is on laid paper that was laid down on a board. Without glass, and of obvious great age, it has been subject to th...

A nicely executed Italian antique pencil and watercolor drawing of classical temple ruins (Doric capitals) with figures, 11 1/2" by 9", in an interesting 19th century frame measuring 15 1/2" by 13". The work appears unsigned, though there is a "G.F." in a rectangle at lower right......likely a collector stamp. On the reverse is written in Italian "rosso matlorio/pass e conire" or similar; also in ink below that, a dedication in Italian: "Alla cara Fra. Virginia ni ricordo di mi Padre Adele La...

An accomplished drawing in pastel, 16" by 31 1/2" (22" by 38" in present framing), signed on the reverse by local Los Angeles artist Julie Belnick (1957-), and dated there 1989. The strange, surrealistic, stark modernist scene is of two brooms leaning against several walls dividing an otherwise empty space. A silvery gray tone dominates, with some subtle yellow mixed in, resulting in an elegant and mysterious work. Belnick is a Southern California artist with an exhibition history. A write u...

A most unusual and interesting DOUBLE-SIDED pencil drawing on wove paper, one side featuring an indian in headdress snatching a child off the shore, a tiny fenced white settlement visible in the upper left corner; the other side features a white man in frontier clothing holding his rifle as a native brave swings his tomahawk. Both sides are signed "E Thompson artist". I am not aware of a known artist by this name so this will rest squarely in the folk art or historical categories. The subtle ...

The unframed work measures 28 3/4" by 23", and is signed by the artist at lower left and dated there 1953. The Illinois-born Lutz is known today for his urban landscapes and genre subjects, often painted with bright color and with heavy impasto. In the late 1920's he began art instruction at the Art Institute of Chicago, at which time...
