A pencil drawing (and touches of white gouache) of the scenery with figures in a small rowboat, around the northeastern end of New York State's Lake George, notably the prominent "Anthony's Nose" feature, dated 1840 at lower right and titled there "L. George". There is no artist signature. This is an exceptionally early work and it would be interesting to know the identity of the artist...

A well-executed watercolor of a tightly grouped bouquet of flowers. This may be a theorem made with stencils, though this painting looks as if it was done freehand. Theorems were more often stenciled on velvet. The style is of the mid-19th century. It could be either American or English. The frame is a good one of that period. The painting was almost certainly in an oval frame originally and the slight shadow around it is evidence of that frame...

Robert Henri 1865-1929 As a young man, he studied in Paris, where he identified strongly with the Impressionists, and determined to lead an even more dramatic revolt against American academic art, as reflected by the conservative National Academy of Design. Together with a small team of enthusiastic followers, he pioneered the Ashcan School of American realism, depicting urban life in an uncompromisingly brutalist style...

Most would see this work as an etching or engraving and never give it a second look----but, it is, amazingly, an original ink on paper drawing (I guarantee that), measuring 23" by 16 3/4" (34 3/4" by 28 3/4" in dark old oak frame). Floating troubadours in their gondola serenade an upscale looking couple at right, as two other figures seem to be appreciating the pretty spring or summer day. The drawing is signed at lower right with what appears as "C J Meancon", the first letters conjoined...

Currier and Ives was a successful American printmaking firm based in New York City from 1835 to 1907 headed first by Nathaniel Currier, and later jointly with his partner James Merritt Ives. The prolific firm produced prints from paintings by fine artists as black and white lithographs that were hand colored...

Ink drawing on heavy card, with a bit of black watercolor in the darker areas, the subject an adorable pug wearing a collar with "William Rifle" on it, and at lower right is written in longhand "Robert Glover Age 7 years"; and at lower left corner within the hand drawn border is the date, "94". I am not sure which one of these names be that of the artist, or if a name is actually that of the pug...

A most unusual and interesting DOUBLE-SIDED pencil drawing on wove paper, one side featuring an indian in headdress snatching a child off the shore, a tiny fenced white settlement visible in the upper left corner; the other side features a white man in frontier clothing holding his rifle as a native brave swings his tomahawk. Both sides are signed "E Thompson artist". I am not aware of a known artist by this name so this will rest squarely in the folk art or historical categories...

Watercolor and ink drawing of a stone house adjacent to a dirt road on which a horse is pulling a buggy, a split rail fence, trees and a cow completing this bucolic scene of times gone by, the art in an oval, vignette style, the painted area 5" by 6 1/2", 13 1/2" by 15" in modern framing, possibly signed at lower left but definitely dated there either 32 or 34. This is a very, very early drawing...

Pencil drawing on paper, 4 1/4" square inside the mat, 9 1/4" by 9 1/4" as framed, signed at lower right "Luce", the subject an elderly man at left and elderly woman at right, both reading a letter or periodical. The paper is browned with age, though, evenly, and there's a small crown-shaped stain that looks like an ink blot, irregularly shaped, at lower right. The work is affixed to a board on which is written in old hand "No. 20"...

This is a charcoal with white highlights fine original drawing of a male head on a plinth, the head appearing as would a Greek or Roman marble sculpture. The work, 16 1/4" by 12" (22" by 18" framed), is signed at bottom by the Austrian artist RUDOLF ZELENKA (1875-1938) and is dated nearby 1894. The drawing would likely be an academic study by the artist at age 19, while receiving art education...

Drawing, I believe in charcoal, 12 3/4" by 18 1/2" inside the matting, framed, but no glass, signed at lower left "M. Moss" and dated "March '93", the subject a large wooden house on a lake surrounded by mountains, small boats tied up in front. I think this is American but I suppose it could also be English; I'm undecided..........though, the framing suggests would make me lean towards American, as the reverse was backed by the typically American wood slats with knotholes...

A pencil sketch of Glendalough county Wicklow Ireland with a strong attribution to the British artist Edward Lear (1812-1888). Drawn with pencil on bluish heavy laid paper with ink, ink washes, touches of white gouche and faded washes of green. In 1835 Lear visited Ireland, one of his early trips as he turned from bird illustration to landscape. The party he traveled with visited Glendalough. During his life Lear saved his sketches and it was not until the 1920’s that they were available. This...
