An interesting late 19th century, antique drawing of woodland plants, unsigned on front, word "Stanyan" on reverse, where the date "Oct. 28th/84" is written in pencil in old hand. The work measures 15" by 11" (slightly smaller inside the pink mat--which plays off the pink flowers) and 23 1/2" by 19 3/4" in frame (no glass)...

Found in Massachusetts, a mixed media (pastel, pencil and black ink) old drawing on paper of a clipper ship at sea, 7" by 9 1/2" (15" by 18 1/2" framed behind glass), signed at lower right corner with initials "A.L" or "A. G." or similar. The ship flies an unidentified flag at the stern. I feel this is likely European though it could possibly be of American origin...

A fine mixed media study drawing in charcoal and white gouache of a soldier seemingly leaning against a wagon wheel, 10 1/4" by 7 5/8" inside the present mat (the sheet only very slightly larger), and 22 1/2" by 18 1/2" in gold frame with hand drawn lines), titled "Bataille de l'Alma"on the mat, signed with an impressed/embossed signature "I PILS" at lower right. The drawing features a scene from the Crimean War (1854)...

To be sold together as a PAIR, here are two ink and gouache drawings of clipper style ships known as barques, each measuring 12 1/2" by 17 3/8" (21 1/2" by 26 3/4" as framed). One is signed "John M. Gorrie" and the other is also signed by the artist and dated 1956. Surprisingly, I do not see a listing for this talented artist...

A Nineteenth Century Watercolor “Merry Christmas “ by G.V.C. inscribed to William and Mrs Reiner circa 1900 measuring 18x15”

This is a work so finely executed that it is difficult to believe that it is a drawing and not a print, but I absolutely guarantee it to be an original drawing. The subject is a priest or monk in an interior nook flooded with sunlight. He is holding a large pair of scissors and appears to be concentrating on a domestic task that is not quite clear to the viewer. At bottom in very poorly spelled German is the phrase "UEBERALL--LOCHER--IM--KIRCHEN--GUT--DA--TUHT--KAIN--FLICKEN--MAHR"...

A rare and wonderful carved Russian Jade Ming Dynasty Horse in the form of a Tang Dynasty Horse measuring 5.5 x 8.5“ dark green jade

Old watercolor drawing (perhaps charcoal in places as well) with slight use of white gouache, unsigned, the subject a younger man of the sixteenth century or thereabouts. The drawing (15 1/2" by 12") is on grayish heavy paper (the true color is indicated by the first two images---the subsequent ones were taken in different light, suggesting a more tan color). The age of the drawing itself is especially difficult to determine in this instance...

There are some references to Tyars' work online, but little biographical information is available...

German composer Robert Schumann (1810 - 1856) is the subject of this thoughtful treatment of one of the great music writers and critics of the Romance era.

The nearly all white sculpture depicts the musician in a pensive focused gaze, carved in simple but expressive lines. The economy of carving contrasts with many 19th century styles which were more extravagant in their renderings of their subjects.

Poignant early handmade drawing of pink and white flowers (lilies of the valley and?) painted in gouache within an oval set off by golden mat, the words "BIRTHDAY GREETINGS FROM YOUR LOVING DAUGHTER ALICE" around the central image. Louis-Auguste-Mathieu Legrand (b.1863-d.1951) Original mixed media of gouache, etching, collage, and ink drawing of a French can can dancer c. 1900 signed lower left. Louis Legrand was an important artist of the Belle Epoque in France in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He trained at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Dijon and in 1884 moved to Paris. An interesting marriage of Japanese kirigami or "kirie" art, (paper intricately cut to a lace-like appearance, that finished work, in this example, a crane standing in water, and surrounded by pine trees) and a circa 1885 American Eastlake style gold and black frame. The paper art measures 5 1/2" by 5", and the entire framed piece 15" by 13 1/2". The kirigami has been laid against a green-blue crushed velvet type surface, creating an interesting effect.
