** PAIR** American 19th century oil on board landscape paintings in Hudson River style, each signed at lower right by listed artist FRANKLIN JAY LEWIS (1838-1910). The feathery trees, color scheme and general handling are in the tradition of the Hudson River School of the eastern states, but these scenes may in fact have been painted in California. The artist was born in Wells, Vermont, and crossed the continent at great effort in 1868, arriving in San Jose, California to begin a new life...

Circa 1970 oil on canvas, 16" by 12" (20 1/2" by 16 1/4" framed), signed at lower left "Joyce". The scene with yellow roses and oriental ceramic figure takes after artists such as Hovsep Pushman and others who in the first half of the 20th century favored such props in their still life works. This is evenly soiled, with some browned varnish too. Otherwise condition is good. The white frame shows some wear.

A poetic landscape with tree and path on the bank of a small lake or large pond, signed at lower right "Zalich" or similar, 9 1/2" by 13" (15 1/2" by 18 3/4" framed), circa 1960. Condition is excellent, frame has a bit of wear consistent with age. The scene is simple but very calming.

A vintage oil on canvas painting of a hardy desert shrub tree in the California dry lands, 24" by 20" (32 1/2" by 28 1/2" framed), signed at lower right by listed artist CYRIL ALDRITT (1899-1966). The luminous impressionist work was obviously created by a trained hand. Aldritt was a native of New York, but grew up in Hollywood...

Oil on canvasboard painting of a home and greenery with a high mountain backdrop, signed at lower left faintly "J. F. Gasser" and inscribed on reverse "Original/by Rev. J. F. Gasser/April 1937/La Crescenta Calif". The work measures 12" by 16" (16" by 19 1/2" framed). The artist does not appear to be listed or known but was talented. An early scene in what is today a highly desirable upscale Los Angeles suburb backing up to the scenic Angeles National Forest.

A contemporary painting on canvas, unframed, 20" by 15 3/4", unframed, the theme seemingly an out-of-this-world painting of space and planets. Difficult to describe, but this sort of imagery is popular, similarsold along the Venice, California boardwalk and elsewhere by enterprising artists. Some of the white spatter seems to be sprayed on. Blue is the general color. Condition is excellent.

An oil on board painting of a harbor surrounded by old houses, 9 3/4" by 13 1/2" (13 3/4" by 17 3/4" framed), unsigned, circa 1950. The work is by a competent, trained artist and exhibits excellent impressionist technique. It seems to be of American origin as "Patent Pending" is stamped on the reverse of the board.

An oil on canvasboard painting of the California desert, painted in unusually pastel-y color palette, signed at lower left by artist Alzira Maria. The piece, 22" by 28" (28" by 34" framed) features an almost Cubist handling in the distant mountains, reminding of artists such as Andrew Dasburg. The painting is clean and wall-ready. Frame is attractive distressed wood style, and liner and gold fillet are in good condition.

A 1978-dated, oil on board painting of a Mid-Century looking building, apparently under construction, in an urban setting, signed at lower right "JAN BAZANOWSKI". The work, 17" by 23" inside the double mat and 24" by 30" in gold metal frame (no glass) is in excellent condition. Frame has some scratches and mat is soiled and could be replaced. The painting is simply very interesting, and unusual; would work well in a Mid-Century setting...

Oil on canvas classic landscape with feathery trees, rolling clouds and distant view, 28" by 38" (34" by 44" as framed), signed at lower left by English-American artist A. SPENCER (Andrew Spencer, born 1896), and titled on stretcher "A Berkshire Landscape". The artist has frequently been misidentified (often said to be one "Augustus Spencer" on AskArt and in auction records)...

A modern (circa 1950's), unframed, oil on canvas painting of two brutish, almost centaur-like men very apparently engaging in some sort of heavy conflict and struggle, signed lower left Ignon, measuring 27" by 33". The artist is GUI IGNON (1897-1963), not widely known today but a man who led a very interesting life and brushed elbows with the famous and intellectuals. Ignon was born in Caen, in Normandy, France...

Oil on board, likely Canadian painting of a curling scene on a large ice rink with a large number of spectators and players, painted very competently in a very charming folk-art style, signed at lower right "S. S. Heath" and dated there 1973. The work reminds a bit of the whimsical folky Canadian paintings of Allen Sapp or William Kurelek. Suprisingly, I see absolutely no information or auction record for any artist of this name. The work measures 16" by 20" and 20" by 24" as framed...

A whimsical, colorful painting of a cat, signed at lower right with initials "C.L" and dated there 1980. The work is on canvas, 21" by 25 1/4" framed. The unknown artist was certainly talented. Further research could possibly determine his/her identity. The painting is in very good vintage condition. There is a bit of light soiling here and there but no punctures or other issues.

A truly rare, quality painting of the Seattle waterfront's Pier 7, circa 1920's, signed lower left by noted Norwegian-American artist YNGVAR SONNICHSEN (1873-1938). The oil on board work measures 18" by 24" (22 1/2" by 28 1/2" in an interesting Stanford White style frame). Written in an old hand on old label on the reverse is "PIER 7 SEATTLE 1925 or earlier"...

Oil on Masonite painting of a young, smiling Native American girl, 12" by 9" (23" by 18 3/4" framed), signed at lower right by the well-known artist of the American Southwest, RAMON KELLEY (born 1939). This is a vigorously painted work of a subject obviously very familiar to the artist. Kelley studied on a scholarship at the Colorado Institute of Art in Denver, where he counted the artist Charlie Dye among his instructors...
