A circa 1900 oil on canvas painting of roses against a simple dark background, 12 1/2" by 18", and 20" by 24 1/2" in likely original bright gold frame. There does not appear to be a signature. Roses were a popular subject of painters during that period, with many young ladies especially encouraged to take up painting. The American painter George Cochran Lambdin often used dark or black backgrounds for his floral still life works...

19th Century American, "Landscape with Waterfalls". This is a very fine Hudson River School landscape, oil on academy board, 9 3/4 x 18 3/4 inches, c. 1880s, unsigned, in an ornate period gilt frame. Although this painting is unsigned it is quite well painted, evidently by a very competent artist.

A turn of the century oil of red roses, signed at lower right "Myrtle Crittenden". There is a "Miss M. Crittenden" listed in Hughes' dictionary of California artists, and she was noted there to have exhibited at the California state fair in 1881. This painting came out of the Sacramento area, so, that makes sense. Not dated but likely dates to early 20th century when such works were still especially popular, as they had since Victorian times...

The photo on the left shows a double portrait by John Singer Sargent of Mr. John White Field and his wife. This painting was done in the early 1880's and is in the collection of Pennyslvania Academy of Fine Arts. The image on the right shows an earlier portrait of Mr. Field by Sargent. Notice Mr. Field is blind in his left eye, which is enlarged and his right eye is focused which is a good eye. It is my opinion that Mr. Field rejected the first portrait of himself done by Sargent...

Early landscape painting of a likely imaginary, idealized, pyramidal mountain peak of California, (doesn't really resemble Mt. Shasta, but I suppose it could be), 20" by 16" on the stretchers, painted on canvas, 25 3/4" by 21 3/4" in a fine old gold 19th century frame, signed at lower right by artist "C. A. Simpson" and dated there 1886. The painting is firmly in the luminous tradition of some of the eastern Hudson River artists, with a pinkish glow suffusing the sky...

An unframed oil on canvas landscape, 12 3/4" by 16", the subject a large lake in high country, a distant mountain in the background and tall spruce-type trees at left along the rocky shore. I have searched diligently for a signature and cannot find one, which is frustrating, as the work is certainly good enough to have been executed by a listed artist. The canvas was laid down on a board circa 1940 or so judging from the "Brownie Board" age...

Oil on canvas painting of a farmer by a water pump in an open field, two dray horses at center and left slaking their thirst. The work measures 11" by 12" and 15 1/2" by 16 1/2" in frame that may well be the original. The painting is signed faintly yet distinctly at lower left corner "S.S.C.", which is one of the known signatures of American artist SAMUEL SIMPSON CARR (1837-1908). Other known signatures include "S.S. CARR" and "S. CARR". Carr was born in England and for a time studied at the ...

Oil on canvas laid on board, 21" by 34" (26" by 39" as framed), unsigned, circa 1880 I would guess, the painting consisting of a classic Hudson River view with steep hills bordering a river, a boat completing the scenery. There is a very nice luminosity to this particular example, a very nice handling of the light in the leaves of the trees. The painting has an approximately 5" long horizontal old cut in lower portion as shown, not unusual for a work of this age. There is also considerable un...

This is a very unusual American portrait of a lady. The painting is oil on canvas mounted loosly on a cardboard with tacks. The painting is done in a many layered style which is similar to the style of Albert Pinkham Ryder (1847-1917). It is marked in pencil on the back Ms. Pitts. The painting is marked in the lower right corner with a large capital R. Many of Ryder paintings have been copied; however this would be a very unusual copy. It is a very American Portrait. The painting measures 1...

Oil on canvas painting of a man's smoking pipe and other objects on a tabletop, 13" by 15", 16 1/2" by 18 1/2" in mid 20th century gold frame, signed at upper right by artist Cora (Cara?) L. Sloper and dated there 1899. This is a competently painted work, but I am unable to locate an artist by this name despite an intensive internet search. The name appears to be common in the upper Midwest, but this painting was purchased in Massachusetts, near Cape Cod. Condition is very good for a work ove...
