A contemporary American painting of a tabby cat next to a vase with flowers, 13 1/2" by 10 3/4" (16" by 13" in white frame), signed at lower right RS and dated there 2008. The artist was a talented amateur but he/she has created an attractive and coordinated scene in black, white, gray and blue. The frame has some smudges that come off with some rubbing and there are a few corner chips.

Striking modern painting on masonite panel, signed on the reverse "Kalamaras --72", likely tempera, the image difficult to describe: the viewer appears to be looking out of a green-framed two pane window at a neighboring house with reddish wall, sloping roof line, and a wooden-looking door-like window.......well, it IS difficult to describe. The work measures 19 1/2" by 15 1/2" inside the frame; inside the green outlines of the "window" the size is 14" by 9 3/4"...

An old "cabin art" oil on soft paper board primitive style painting of Northern California's famed Mt. Shasta, towering over a rugged landscape including waterfall, tall trees, steep gorge, and a charming log house at left with smoke coming from the chimney. The painting measures 24 1/2" by 19 1/2", unframed. The board is warped, the surface uneven, and there is a snaking 8" crack in the board at right and small puncture at lower center. This is a folky painting of someone's favorite St. Bernard dog, circa 1870's or 1880's (ONE OF TWO SUCH WORKS IN MY SHOP). I believe the type of painting might well be called "hard edge", there being sharp delineations between strips of color. George Hawley Hallowell 1872-1926, Arlington, Mass. This exceptional oil on canvas is 30"x30" in a 1920's 2" period gold leaf original Newton Macklin frame. It is in good condition, signed and dated on the lower right. His paintings sell for up to $10,000. He is listed in Fieldings, Mallett, and Who Was Who in American Art.

A large oil on canvas, 36" by 24" (44" by 32" framed), the subject a number of circus clowns, skillfully painted, signed at lower right by noted American clown artist ROBERT OWEN (1930-). Owen was born in Polk County, Missouri. For many years he has been recognized as a master at painting clowns. Reproduction prints have been made from many paintings. This example is in excellent condition. Note also the interesting framing.

The subdued colors and careful arrangement suggest familiarity with the great Italian still life master Giorgio Morandi. There is a coldness, a stillness, that is quite monumental. A vintage oil on canvas painting of a river canyon of the west or Southwest, circa 1950's, good-sized at 24" by 32" (32" by 40" in the likely original old charming frame), signed at lower right by artist Charles Crowder. I do not see a "listed" artist name that would correspond. The work much resembles that of California impressionist landscape artist James Merriam (1880-1951). Condition is excellent.

Likely painted for the southern tourist trade between about 1920 and 1950 or so, is this oil on a slice of palmetto wood, roughly oval shape, approximate dimensions 10" by 13", the slab 1" thick, signed at bottom left in the image "A. Donhauser". This locale could be anywhere from Texas through Georgia, given the Spanish Moss on the tree. The palmetto slab is unusual and adds interest. An unusual item. There is a small loss on the tree trunk.
