Set of THREE Italian circa 1946 paintings on canvas, in decorative gold matching frames, unsigned, each 9" by 11 1/4" as framed, the subject familiar scenes of Venice, executed in the classical eighteenth century style of Canaletto or Guardi. These works were commonly produced for the tourist trade by talented artists. This set evidently dates to the immediate post-war period, as one bears a date stamp on reverse, 3 Ottobre 1946 and a "Made in Italy" circular sticker...

Owles was born in England and is today perhaps best known for his accurate watercolors of aircraft and early aviation, including depictions of World War I dogfights, with which he was personally familiar, having flown in the early craft as a photographer...

Watercolor on paper, 15" by 22", signed at lower right in pencil "Denny Winters" and dated 1943, showing a shoreline with exposed rocks at low tide, perhaps on an estuary. The artist DENNY WINTERS (1905-1985) was born in Michigan and died in Maine, but spent time in the Midwest and California in her lifetime. She worked at Woodstock in a WPA style, but later works became abstract, and her full oeuvre includes printmaking...

By listed Southern California artist BERTHA TOWNSEND COLER (1865-1948), a large, bulk group of unframed works that came from the liquidation of the contents of a Pacific Palisades home, the owners related to the artist. There were many, many works by the artist at the liquidation (see the framed oils elsewhere in my shop), a number of which I procured. Offered here as a group are 23 watercolors (5 double-sided), and one unstretched oil landscape. TWELVE of the works are signed...

Signed at lower left "Albert L. Fischer", this is an unframed, sizable oil on canvas (46" by 27"), the scene almost mural-like: an apparently Italian lake (see the gondolier at right), framed by blooming wisteria dripping off a trellis at top and climbing a lattice at bottom, several boats plying the calm lake waters. I don't see a listing for the artist...

Vintage watercolor painting of the famous miniature drawbridge in the far western part of the island (Somerset Parish), actually signed twice at lower right "Worcester" or (less likely) "Norcester", and dated "42". I am so far unable to connect this to a known, listed artist working in the islands. The work measures 12" by 16" as framed. Note the typical, quaint old whitewashed stone Bermuda house at left and the white roofs and shutters...

Large original fresco on board by Mario Toppi (Italy, United States, 1899-1976). This work retains its original Italian frame. It is signed M. Toppi l.r. and also on the verso. Mario Toppi is a well listed artist. 32" by 43".

A vintage watercolor painting of a Southwest style interior, with large barred window allowing light into a spar room with rocker, small shelf with objects, and plants. It is a simple composition but nicely painted by a talented hand. The work is signed at lower right but I am unable to make out the signature. The work measures 8 1/2" by 11 3/4" (13 1/2" by 17" in simple frame). The paper is toned with age and the frame has a little wear.

Banka Maruyama was a Japanese watercolor artist whose work spanned the Meiji, Taishō and Shōwa periods. Today, his work can be found in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo.
