Old (possibly 19th century, early 20th at latest) American watercolor painting of a small cove and beach, unsigned, 9" by 12 5/8" inside the present mat (13" by 16 3/4" in modern framing), with some experimental sketching by the artist on the reverse. On that side he/she wrote "Aug. 19 water deeper, especially in the curve". The drawing is by a talented hand which unfortunately did not sign it. No listed artist comes up with a search for this name, but that does not diminish the quality of the work itself, which probably dates to about the 1940's. There are two missing small areas of paint at left, otherwise condition is excellent. The frame post-dates the art and is pleasant and complementary.

This work needs some TLC, due to a large rip, unstable and missing paint, and grime......a vintage late 19th century/early 20th century work on canvas, 18" by 30", unframed, apparently unsigned, the subject one of the volcanoes of the Pacific Northwest. The painting should be saved for posterity, but for that to happen, it will require relining, cleaning and inpainting by a professional restorer. If you are a restorer yourself, this would be an ideal acquisition.
