Orlando Norie (1832–1901), artist of military subjects, perhaps the most prolific painter of the British army in the 19th century along with Richard Simkin. It has been estimated that Norie alone painted well over 5,000 pictures. Although his family were of Scottish descent, they had moved to the continent, and Orlando was born in Bruges, Belgium on 15 January 1832...
A contemporary oil on canvasboard painting, 16" by 20", 19 1/2" by 23 1/2" as framed, the subject an intimate little harbor no doubt in coastal Maine, with a lobsterman's shack and traps stacked on the deck, and his trap-identifying floats hanging on the side of the structure. The talented amateur artist "Paula" signed at lower right and dated the work '98. The work has accumulated a little light soiling and two small abraded areas, as shown.
A contemporary Thai or otherwise Southeast Asian painting of traditional thatched houses by the water, palms, banana trees, water buffalo and blooming lilies completing the scene. Oil on canvas 13 1/2" by 20", 17" by 23" in attractive, complementary, grayish, distressed-look wood framing. Condition is excellent. The work is signed at lower left with what appears as "Song Suk".

The place could be Venice, California, or perhaps Newport Beach. The painting is signed in light purple at lower left with conjoined initials "MZ", which bring to mind the noted California artist Milford Zornes (1908-2008)...

There is stable authentically old "alligatoring" of the paint (a crackling pattern related to how quickly the paint dried)...
