Still Life With Game, depicting a hare was done circa 1910 in oil on canvas. The painting is very fine and recalls the Still life’s by Manet and others just a few years earlier. The work is done in a highly impressionist style

Italian Artist MARTUCCI what is an Italian artist in the 20th century this work is a Neapolitan view of Naples measuring 15 x 23“ in a very beautiful matching 19th century frame that measures 24 x 32“
Oil on canvas laid on masonite still life painting of pink grapes and a vase, 25" by 30" (31 1/2" by 36 1/2" as framed), signed at lower right by artist G. ANSON WHITE. Strangely, I can find only minimal references to an artist by this name, despite the amazingly skillful and sensitive rendering of the clusters of grapes. In such cases I am often left to wonder if perhaps the artist was actually someone well known who chose to sign the work with a pen name for one reason or another...
A beautifully painted 1927 oil on canvas of flowering plants in ceramic pots on a small terrace or deck, signed at lower left with what appears as "Yos. Bell" followed by "Mallorca 1927". This would have been painted during the optimistic years between the wars, on Spain's Balearic Islands. The unframed piece measures 26 1/2" by 31 1/2". An online search for an artist name that matches this has been unsuccessful; perhaps I am misreading it...
Oil on thin card painting of a scenic rocky promontory and turquoise seas, possibly oil on thin canvas laid on card, 9 1/8" by 12 1/8", (14 1/2" by 17 1/4" framed), not signed on front, but on reverse in pen (ballpoint, possibly) is some writing in Russian. A Lithuanian friend who reads Russian said it appears to say the subject is "Gurzuf", which is a popular spot and favorite artist's subject in the Crimea...

For the collector of vintage plein air art, this is a classic drawing on tan paper executed in Italy in the year 1924 by well listed, frequently auctioned California plein air artist DANA BARTLETT (1882-1957). This drawing measures 8 1/2" by 11 1/2" inside the framing (12 3/8" by 15 1/4" as framed). It is signed in a longhand signature at lower left, and at lower right is inscribed "Venice Italy" and the date 1924 once again...
Pastel on paper laid on thick paperboard, 22" by 18", unframed, signed at lower left and dated 1921 by the artist, DAVID COMBA ADAMSON (1859-1926). In this drawing the artist shows his skill with the pastel medium. This is a sensitive portrait of an attractive young lady against an interesting striped pattern background, a red rose before her. There is no indication as to who she might have been (no writing/labels on reverse)...
Pastel on paper painting of an outdoorsman cooking his dinner over an open fire alongside a creek or lake, the setting sun reflected on the waters where his boat is tied up, the work measuring 17 1/2 " by 25" (23 1/2" by 28" in its vintage circa 1920's frame). Signed at lower right "Gillette", this is by an American artist who was a member of the early century pastel school, now best known for works by William Henry Chandler, Glatthaar, Gunderson, and others...
Pastel on thin paper board seascape of waves and distant shipping on a gray, overcast day, 10" by 18" (15" by 23" as framed) signed at lower left "Mangold". This is an early work by an obviously talented artist who does not appear to be "listed". This pastel comes with its original old early 20th century frame...
Pastel on soft old board, the subject a light green and white sensitive spring landscape, measuring 14 1/4" by 19 1/8" (19 1/2" by 24 1/2" as framed), not signed on the front that I can see but on the reverse in old hand is written "Blossom Time/F J Girardin/The Old Watering Place/To Leighton DeMen". This is a satisfying impressionistic work by a Kentucky-born artist who early in life painted in downstate Indiana, where he was a fixture in the early 20th century art colony, and who later in li...
Pastel on paper drawing of desert mountains and cacti, 17" by 23" (24" by 30" framed), signed at lower right in pencil and dated there 1922 by listed southwestern American woman artist BETH MacLAFFERTY BLAKE (1901-1993). This would have been among the earlier works of an artist who was born in Berkeley, California and went on to become a well regarded talent in the Southwest. Blake was a pupil of Perham Nahl, Ray Boynton, Hans Hofmann, Chiura Obata, Karl Neuhaus and Millard Sheets. By the tim...
Crayon drawing of two nude females, 13 1/2" by 9 1/2" inside the mat, 20" by 16" framed, bearing at lower right the stamped atelier signature of the important French artist ACHILLE-EMILE OTHON FRIESZ (1879-1949). On the reverse, a modern label gives the title as "Nude with Veil". Friesz was born in Le Havre to a family of shipbuilders and sea captains. He was educated there and went to Paris after the turn of the century, with his lifelong friend Raoul Dufy (see print by the latter in my shop...
Large size (39" by 27 1/2" framed) pastel of hollyhocks in bloom, apparently unsigned, drawn on canvas. The work probably dates to the first third of the 20th century, when the flower was more popular and more commonly planted around houses. Most pastels are on paper, so a work on canvas is more unusual. Due to the size and the glass, a local Southern California buyer would be very welcomed. Except for a small bit of contact with the glass, the drawing is in fine condition.
This is a finely executed pastel drawing of a soldier of approximately the 17th century in Europe, 22 1/2" by 16 1/2" (27" by 20 1/2" framed), signed at lower left with the initials "A R". I have been unable to connect this to a known artist but the quality is evident. Laid down on the backing, the work is in excellent condition behind glass. I believe it could have been created in the 19th century but lean more towards the turn of the century or early 20th century, the initials having a certa...
A vintage, old, pastel on paper drawing of old steep-roofed houses in a mountain landscape, 10 1/2" by 15 1/2" (14 1/2" by 19" as framed, no glass), signed at lower right corner with initials that appear as "SHC.". The work probably dates to the 1920's or 1930's, judging from the style, and framing materials. The old paper has browned heavily and one can see a ghost image of the drawing on the reverse side. This should be re-framed with non-acidic materials, and room should be left for a prop...
A fine landscape drawing in pastel by a skilled hand, Swiss-born artist MAXIM (MAXIMILIAN) SEIBOLD. The drawing measures 9 1/4" by 12 1/2" (13 1/4" by 16 1/2" in attractive probably original old gold framing---very light wear). Seibold was a competent and talented artist, very active around the year 1920, who seems to have left behind little biographical information. Born in Switzerland, he evidently came to America at least by the 'teens, as drawings of Florida and elsewhere are known. More...
The highly impressionistic American oil paintings of Anthony Thieme, noted Cape Ann, Massachusetts artist, are among the most sought after works in today's auction scene, some bringing prices well into the mid five figures or higher. Those works are typically scenes of Rockport, Gloucester, Florida and far=flung locations such as Italy and Central America. It is rather less known that Thieme in his earlier years worked in creating stage designs. This rare early drawing, signed at lower left a...
A Mogal Persian illuminated pages pair in a matted frame. Full color watercolor and tempura with gold leaf applied double sided
Extraordinary oil on wood panel painting depicting Native American thatched huts on an Arizona Indian Reservation. The coloring of the work is especially nice--with a predominance of amber, lavender, and yellow. The style is nearly impressionistic, particularly in the treatment of the background. The painting remains in its original giltwood frame. The backing paper bears two inscriptions in different hands, "Indian Reservation in Arizona--1920" and "Indian Reservation in Ariz From The Schul...
Oil on canvas laid in recent times on wood panel, 19 3/4" by 15 3/4", unframed, the subject three Roman women watching from an exposed cliffside residence as they search the sea below for the ships of loved ones returning home. This is after an 1895 work by well-known, important, English Victorian artist LAWRENCE ALMA-TADEMA (1836-1912), titled "A Coign of Vantage". This is not painted as finely as the original, to be sure, but the artist was moderately skilled. There is stable craquelure. T...

American Impressionist School, ca. 1910. Oil on canvas depicting a woodland pond amid autumn foliage. Though unsigned, the painting is clearly the work of a talented artist and is reminiscent of the work of Julian Alden Weir. The coloring is sophisticated and the perspective and reflections in the water are perfectly accomplished. The canvas remains on its original stretcher. Size: canvas, 30" x 26"; overall, 35-1/2" x 31-1/2".
