Extreme left corners are either dog-eared or missing, and there is a light horizontal crease that likely would not be noticeable at normal viewing distance when framed. This antique early 19th-century Spanish Colonial Mexican Retablo features Our Lady Refuge of Sinners (Nuestra Senora de Refugio de Los Pecadores). It is finely hand-painted in oil on a tin panel. The painting depicts the Virgin Mary holding the Baby Jesus wrapped in a cloth. The Baby Jesus holds his mother's hand and sleeve for support. This is a work showing, no doubt, the clipper ship Joseph Conrad, berthed at the Mystic Seaport in Connecticut. The clipper was built in Denmark in 1882 and was renamed as the Joseph Conrad. An unstretched oil on canvas of a rocky forested coast, presumably in Finland, signed at lower right and dated there 1936 by listed Finnish artist TOIVE JYRINKI (1895-1988). The canvas measures 13 1/4" by 18 3/4". There does not appear to be a lot of information on the talented artist. The scene is reminiscent of much 19th century American art such as paintings of the rocky coast of Maine. Condition is vintage good, needs to be mounted and framed.
