Circa 1870's watercolor, in Victorian or turn of the century gold frame, signed at lower left. Signed by an apparently little known artist, Carl H. Schmidt. The watercolor measures 9 1/2" by 13 1/4" (21" by 24 1/2" framed). The scenery portrayed is perhaps in the Northeast states. When I originally acquired this item, it was with a watercolor of Florida (copied from a Currier and Ives print), signed by the same artist. That piece, of the same age as this, was sold separately.

Anthony Van Dyck, European, 1599-1641, "Adrianus Stalbent". This is an original engraving by Paulus Pontius after the painting by Anthony Van Dyck. The image size is 9 5/8 x 6 3/4 inches, c. 1700s, inscribed "Ant. van Dyck pinxit" and "Paul. du pont sculpt" in the lower left margin, with the title and a phrase in Latin below the image, with the original Kennedy Gallery label. Stalbent was a Flemish landscape painter and friend of Anthony Van Dyck when this portrait was painted...

Warren Davis, American, 1865-1928, "The Squirrel". A beautiful original etching by Warren Davis, this image measures 7 3/4 x 5 7/8 inches, pencil signed. Warren Davis studied at the Art Students League in New York and became known for his etchings of idealized female figures, many of which were used on the covers of Vanity Fair and Life magazines. Later in his career Davis exhibited in Europe and the United States including the Pennsylvania Academy and the Salmagundi Club...

Torii Kiyonaga, Japanese, 1752-1815, "Two Women with Young Servant". This woodblock print by Torii Kiyonaga measures 9 1/2 x 7 inches. It is signed, sealed and titled within the image. Kiyonaga was one of the great masters of the full-color print depicting courtesans, beautiful women and Kabuki actors. Head of the Torii school, he excelled with "bijin-ga" (beautiful women) prints and these were considered to be his best works.

A watercolor painting of a lonely lighthouse on coastal dune cliffs of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, signed at lower right by artist HARVEY JOHN DODD (1933-2011) and dated there 1987. This appears to be an unusually large example of the artist's work, at 21 1/2" by 15 1/4" (29" by 23 1/2" as framed in light wood with Plexiglas). Dodd is known for his coastal and marine works...

Lester George Hornby 1882-1956 American This is an original color aquatint etching by American artist Lester George Hornby. The title is "Le Fete a Pantin", it was created and printed in 1911 in an edition of 25. The image measures 9 3/4X14 5/8 inches. This etching is hand signed in pencil lower right and printed on a medium weight laid type paper.

"William Hogarth" "Characters and Caricaturas" and "Battle of the Pictures" The Works of William Hogarth" as published by Baldwin, Cradock and Joy in 1822 with the original plates restored by James Heath, engraver to His Majesty. The Heath edition was the last to print directly from Hogarth's original engraved plates. All William Hogarth prints appearing after this date are copies of these original graphic works of art...

A classic painting of the Southwest---featuring desert vegetation, high mountains in the distance, (titled, probably in artist's hand, on stretcher, "Desert Verbena near Palm Springs"), by the noted, well-listed California impressionist artist, JOHN ANTHONY CONNER (1892-1971). The oil on canvas measures 24" by 30" (28 1/2" by 34 1/2" in old probably original frame)...

A turn of the century oil of red roses, signed at lower right "Myrtle Crittenden". There is a "Miss M. Crittenden" listed in Hughes' dictionary of California artists, and she was noted there to have exhibited at the California state fair in 1881. This painting came out of the Sacramento area, so, that makes sense. Not dated but likely dates to early 20th century when such works were still especially popular, as they had since Victorian times...

A Hand Colored Botanical Print Portraying Four Varieties of Watsonia. The Artist is the Victorian Jane Webb Loudon (1807-1858), and the Print is from the book “The Ladies Flower Garden of Ornamental Bulbous Plants” (plate 9), published in 1841 by Day and Haghe London, Lithographer to Queen Victoria. Joseph Pennell, American, 1857-1926, "The Square". This 1920 etching by the American artist Joseph Pennell measures 9 3/4 x 7 7/8 inches, pencil signed, edition of probably 50 proofs, cat: Wuerth 740. Pennell was an important American etcher, lithographer and illustrator. Good friends with James McNeill Whistler, he and his wife co-authored his biography.
