An American circa late 1960's to about 1970 still life painting in oil on rough side of the Masonite, 18" by 14" (24" by 19 1/2" framed), signed at lower left possibly "Pardoe". This work needs some TLC, due to a large rip, unstable and missing paint, and grime......a vintage late 19th century/early 20th century work on canvas, 18" by 30", unframed, apparently unsigned, the subject one of the volcanoes of the Pacific Northwest. The painting should be saved for posterity, but for that to happen, it will require relining, cleaning and inpainting by a professional restorer. If you are a restorer yourself, this would be an ideal acquisition.

American Artist Leon Gutmann born in New York and studied with many of the abstract Artist including those of the Students League. He was personal friend of the artist Hans Hoffman and also showed with Max Kassler. Gutmann studied in France after being educated in his Native New York, after WWI. He met the French Artist Jean De Botton, in 1950 who introduced him to his circle of painters and influential to his work.

A print I first thought could be Pennsylvania Dutch imagery, but which now appears to be of some European origin, perhaps the Appenzell area of Switzerland, or elsewhere in Europe. This very well carved agate contemporary snuff bottle is 2 ¾” high, 1” wide and 3 quarters of an inch thick. The artist used the colors very well. The lighter part was carved as the body of the bottle. The dark part was carved as a bamboo branch with leaves and small Ling Zhi (tree mushroom). It is well hollowed, polished and in great condition.
