Shou Lao is the Chinese deity of longevity and is also called Shou Xing, Shou Hsing, and Nan Ji Xian Weng. Legend holds that Shou Lao began as a star in the southern constellation Argo, and he is sometime referred to as the Old Man of the South Pole. He is easily recognizable by his over sized forehead, representing wisdom, and his extra long beard, which is meant to literally demonstrate a long life...

Large Meiji Period Bunraku Puppet of Tokagawa Ieyasu. Extremely rare on this grand scale (4 feet high, 122 cm). This fine quality puppet was possibly made at the request of the puppeteer Kiritake Monjuro II, as the hero in Bunraku plays. It has a fantastic dynamic presence, and is carved of Poloma wood covered in gofun (oyster shell lacquer) featuring sumptuous silk brocades with Tokagawa crests and dragons.

This jarlet is small but it´s colour is amazing. Among hundreds of such jarlets there might be one piece that shows a bluegreen like this. Song - Yuan Longquan Celadon ware. H : 4,6 cm. Condition : Perfect. The " chips " to the rim are all covered with the original glaze - thus the piece is in it´s original condition.

Beautiful Japanese Bonbori lanterns for hina dolls. Hand painted on silk and it is indeed one of a kind. The bonboris are placed on each side of the Emperor and Empress hina dolls during the Hina Matsuri Festival, Girl's Day, in March.

We have not seen this type of lantern until now. The silk is lifted here and there and detached from the frames with some deterioration (probably a reaction to the glue or metal). The amazing thing is how the original colors maintained without fading...

This is very a silk Fukusa cloth of the highest class in Edo period(1800-1850). There is neither stain nor damage, too. There is a part where the color changes into the lining. It is a great condition. Everything is embroidered by the hand with silk. It recommends it for your collection. It is a design of the five festival days in Japan...

Unique Japanese antique clay doll, Mingei folk art of Japan, Emperor and Empress hina dolls (Dairi bina). Clay dolls were made all over Japan by the late Edo period (1603-1868) by off-season farmers which would often involve the entire family for extra income. These dolls were for the regular people (over 90 percent of the population were farmers then) who could not afford pretty hina dolls made out of cloth...

Unnecessarily to commentate this piece with many words. The images actually say everything and connoisseurs immediately will recognize the importance of this extremely rare piece. Yuan Dynasty fourteenth century. Jingdezhen ware. H : 12,4 cm. Condition : Nearly a miracle is it, that the spout and the loop handle are unbroken resp. in an absolute perfect condition. Also the front site of the piece is in an absolute perfect condition...

Musha Ningyo of Minamoto no Yoshitsune dressed for the Imperial Court. He is wearing a fantastic brocade robe and a spectacular court hat. This wonderful rare example of high quality has a great presence, sumptuous brocades, gold lacquered armor, and many other fine details. His face is gorgeously and masterfully carved with finely burnished gofun (white clam shell lacquer). An extraordinary example. Height: 22.5 inches, 57 cm.

Another highlight of our family collection: Rather large Chinese Kinuta Seiji Celadon Vase for Japanese Tea Ceremony. Classical mallet (kinuta) shaped celadon vase in the style of the longquan kilns of the 13th century. The celadon glaze is applied very thickly and the vase may have been glazed and fired more than one time. Some fine aesthetic hairlines complete its beautiful expression.

The execution of the foot rim and the texture of the clay matches the Chinese original...

This is a superior Takeda ningyo (doll), an old Japanese theater doll which was most likely modeled after the character, Teiseiko from “Kokusenya-ya-Gassen.” It was a popular theater play in 18th to 19th century Japan. The setting of the play is during mid 17th century China towards the end of the Ming Dynasty. Teiseiko (also known as Watonai) was fighting the battle for the old dynasty...
