A pair of soft paste porcelain underglaze hand painted blue and white porcelain plates in the “La Mouche” pattern. These have a mark that I can’t identify, though they may well be a workman’s factory mark. The pattern of the fly buzzing a bush is distinctively from the Tournai factory. The pair of shallow soup plates are 9 1/8 inches (22.86 cm) diameter.

Condition: No chips, cracks, hairlines or repairs. Use and stacking wear on both sides of both soups.

Antique Japanese low Todana tansu with one large drawer and a compartment opened with sliding panels. Mostly made of Sakuranoki (Cherry) wood, the sliders have horizontal slats over Keyaki (Zelkova) wood panels. As well, the side panels of the tansu are also made of Keyaki. The sides and back of the tansu are reinforced with sakura wood bracing. Hardware includes iron Warabite drawer pulls and lock on sliding panels.

An unusual Arita blue & white porcelain plate, circa 1700 - 1750. A smaller dish with similar moulded and gadrooned edge and border of spiky foliage is in the Victoria & Albert Museum, London. An Arita Export porcelain plate in Dutch ‘Kraak’ style. A plate with the same border is illustrated in the Impey Collection “Japanese Export Porcelain, Catalogue of the collection of the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. Hotei Publishing, Amsterdam, 2002”, item 12. The border pattern shows a striking similarity to that used for V.O.C. orders produced at the Hikeoba and Sarugawa kilns. Circa 1680.

Exceptional and very important Edo period chawan by legendary master potter Hirasawa Kuro (1772-1840), a famous Samurai and potter who produced tea ceremony ware for the Tokugawa clan in Nagoya. His work is rare and mostly exhibited in Japanese museums.

The bowl comes with the original silk shifuku and its antique fitted lacquered box.  It does present a couple of aesthetic repairs and a very fine hairline running from the mouth rim, but that is not unusual for that kind of fragil...

From our collection of unique Japanese Tea Bowls we present you another rare piece of art: a Japanese Wan-Nari Chawan with Urushi lacquer, shaped in wabi-sabi tradition in the 19th century (late Edo Period 1603-1868). Wan Nari (椀形) Chawan are quite rare and a fine addition to any collection of Japanese Chawan. It is the only one we were able to acquire in the 20th century.

A jewel-like miniature ‘Imperial’ Satsuma vase, of baluster form with elephant head handles. One side is decorated with flowering lotus, the other with a gourd vine. The base has the signature Hogetsu beneath a blue Shimizu mon.

Antique Japanese rectangular bronze censor with four legs. The lid has a pierced floral motif and a fu-dog finial. The body of the censor has dragons for handles and is encircled with a scrolling key fret motif. The front has a highly raised makara-like elephant-headed water serpent while the back has a raised peacock. The bottom has a six character mark.
