This absolutely wonderful pair of Victorian opera glasses are marked Lemaire Fabt, Paris. They were made in Paris, and date back to about 1880-90. They measure 4” wide and 3” tall when fully extended and were part of the extravagant Paris opera scene during the Victorian period. What a joy to be able to take them to the opera today. This is the original 11 1/4" by 12 1/2" painted face from a 19th century grandfather or grandmother clock, probably American, circa 1840. It stands as a work of folk art in and of itself. How the piece became separated from its clock will forever remain a mystery. There is no maker's name or town, just the Roman numeral numbers, and a theme of strawberries and leaves, along with gold decoration in the corners...

Antique Japanese Shō, mouth organ (flute) used in Gagaku (classical performances traditionally for the imperial court). A musician blows through the silver lined protruding mouthpiece. The air travels through the bamboo tubes creating notes (said to sound like the Ho bird or phoenix). Skillful musicians are able to blow air in and out of the mouth pieces creating sustained, uninterrupted notes.
The arrangement of bamboo tubes are said to resemble the folded wings of the phoenix...
