Something of a mystery, this is a very interesting soft pencil drawing of a young woman, 13 1/4" by 9 1/4" (19" by 15" framed), signed indecipherably at lower right and dated there 1931. Try as I might, I have absolutely come to a dead end when it comes to figuring out this signature. Adjacent to that signature an inscription reads "Baroness Leonnie Perraja"...
Japanese limited edition sosaku hanga “kappa-ban” (stencil print) by Yoshitoshi Mori (1898-1992) titled “Onna Joruri” features a female performer singing traditional narrative music to the accompaniment of a shamisen. The print is pencil-signed “Y. Mori” at the lower left, with the artist’s red seal above. It is dated ’73 and numbered 56/70. The lower edge of the paper also contains the title and the original purchase price of 70,000 yen...
A scarce watercolor work of Southern art, the subject a street scene with traditional historic architecture including a church, two tiny figures and a tree, measuring inside the wood frame 9 3/4" by 7 3/4" (14 3/4" by 13" framed). The scene could be New Orleans or Charleston, South Carolina; I found the work in western Virginia. There is a signature at lower right but all attempts to read it have failed, though, it does appear that the date 1905 is at lower right...
Description: Nicely painted portrait of a young matron wearing a gold locket and a white lace frock, presented in a
rose gilt brass pendant frame. Size : 3" x 2 1/4", in very good condition.
**FOUR** small etchings of familiar and beloved San Francisco scenes, by the noted California artist HARRIET GENE ROUDEBUSH (1908-1998). They are titled at lower left margin as follows: "Telegraph Hill from Russian Hill"; "View from the Fairmont"; "Sausalito"; and "Telegraph Hill". All are pencil signed at lower right by the artist. Roudebush was born in Portland, Oregon and moved to Sacramento as a youth...
Samuel Chamberlain, American, 1895-1975, etching, "Amalfi", image size: 7 x 7 inches, numbered 88/100, 1925, cat. Chamberlain and Kingsland-8, pencil signed lower right, framed.
Six original 32 etchings by Jacques Callot comprising the full series LES PENITENTS ET PENITENTES, Lieure catalog numbers 1315-1319, second state of two except for the frontispiece, which is the first state. Wonderful designs, excellent clean prints. Framed and glazed, not examined outside of frame. Average print size 65 x 43 mm (2 1/2 x 1 3/4 inches), frame size 12 x 14 inches.
A colorful, somewhat whimsical painting of the dramatic California coastline, with houses and palm trees and tiny figures showing the imprint of man on this physically dramatic and beautiful geography. The painting, 22" by 28", unframed, is signed at lower right by artist Sidney Hall. I do see online information for a California, female artist who signs Sydney Hall, but am not sure this is the same individual. The present work is not brand new; could date to 1980's or 1990's possibly...
Watercolor and gouache painting on paper, 20 3/4" by 32 1/2" inside the mat (37" by 50" as framed), signed at lower right by noted well listed American 19th century artist Edmund Darch Lewis. Lewis was a prolific artist. He worked in both oil and watercolor. Auction records have exceeded $90,000 for his finest oils. I once saw one oil of a tropical landscape in Cuba, in the Hudson River tradition, priced at $25,000, and that was too low...
Oil on old gray art board painting of a pirate swashbuckler in the 17th century, 15" by 10" (23" by 18" framed), unsigned, executed in the earlier 20th century style of N. C. Wyeth. This work might have been created circa 1920 or so as an illustration to a book perhaps. The image would be a fine addition to a young boy's room. Condition is excellent save for a few small losses, one at center left (appearing as blue spot) and a loss in the figure's pants (light blue area at bottom).
What fun this print is—a swirl of kanji virtually unreadable but a delight to the eye. 79-9 was done in 1979 and measures 9.25in W x 10.75in H.
The print is in excellent condition.
A watercolor drawing of the famous (since 1862) Cafe du Monde in the old Vieux Carre (French Quarter) of New Orleans, Louisiana, signed at lower left by listed American artist PIERRE MENAGER (1894-1973). The work is dated there 1942. Menager was born in Nantes, France and traveled widely during his life within the southern and western United States, creating art wherever he went. He is best known for landscapes and seascapes of California and the Southwest...
From our African Collection: Fante Akuaba Doll, circa 1960.
Akua'ba (sometimes spelled Akwaba or Akuba) are wooden ritual fertility dolls from Southern Ghana and nearby areas. The best known akua'ba are those of the Fanti people, “Fanti Dolls” whose akua'ba have large, disc-like heads. Other tribes in the West Africa region (f.ex...
Large folio size print, sheet measuring 18 1/4" by 24 1/2" inside the mat, 27 1/4" by 33 1/2" as framed, titled at bottom. This image was produced by Currier in 1868, but I believe this example to be a high quality hand colored RESTRIKE of a later date. It's a great image, with grandparents in their snug Victorian 1860's New England interior, a roaring fire and their granddaughter indicating the other seasons of life. The print is in excellent fresh condition; allow for reflections in glass...
Max Slevogt, German, 1868-1932, drypoint etching, "Two Tigers", image size: 4 1/8 x 5 1/2 inches, 1913, edition of 35, pencil signed. From "10 Radierte Tierstudien von Max Slevogt."
Original lithograph print "The Great East River Suspension Bridge" (the Brooklyn Bridge), 1881, by the noted American printmakers Currier and Ives. The image shows the bridge, sailing and steam craft around it, including a steam paddlewheeler. The bridge was an engineering marvel of the world at the time and a point of great civic pride...
A very unusual painting that looks like a mix of Japanese Anime, the Big Eye School, and a Katy Perry video: oil on canvas, 24" by 18 1/2" on the stretchers, 28 1/2" by 22 1/4" as framed, signed at lower left by artist Christina Anthony. I do not see internet information on the artist, who was technically talented. The scene is a complete fantasy, with curling red and white striped candy canes, cupcakes, and lollypops lining a curving road. Most definitely a unique image. Condition is excel...
Gerard Audran, European, 1640-1703, Engraving after Mignard, "Ego Sum Pastor Bonus", image size: 12 1/4 x 8 7/8 inches, sheet size: 18 1/2 x 12 3/4 inches, Fogg Museum provenance, Randall collection #4065
