He studied art in Munich and Zurich before WWII. He escaped Nazi Germany and emigrated to the USA via Cuba. He taught at Brooklyn College, at Sweet Bryar College, and eventually moved to Israel where he taught at Haifa University.

This painting is hand signed and dated 1966 by the artist. The image measures 13 1/2X17 1/2 inches. Unwin was the well known artist and illustrator who lived and worked in Peterborough New Hampshire. The image size is 9 5/8 x 6 3/4 inches, c. 1700s, inscribed "Ant. van Dyck pinxit" and "Paul. du pont sculpt" in the lower left margin, with the title and a phrase in Latin below the image, with the original Kennedy Gallery label. Stalbent was a Flemish landscape painter and friend of Anthony Van Dyck when this portrait was painted...

Oil on canvas laid on canvasboard at a later date, (13" by 16 1/4" as framed), signed boldly at lower right in Greek "PIPIS XARALAMBIS" and dated there 1914. The artist does not appear to be well known but the painting is nicely executed, with an excellent luminosity. In my experience, vintage and antique Greek paintings are quite scarce. The tall cypress trees at left balance the distant temple ruins at right. More research might reveal more on the artist...
