Etching on delicate Japan paper, 13 3/4" by 10 1/2" inside the mat (20" by 15 1/2" framed) signed in the plate at lower right by the important 19th century French etcher, CHARLES MERYON (1821-1868). There are modern-day notations on the framing paper: "....Casimir Le Comte after Gustave Boulanger, 2nd state, 1856, and "from Kennedy & Co." Meryon was born in Paris to an English physician father and French dancer mother...
This is a most unusual and appealing pop art painting (unframed, 27" by 35") by a mid-coast California artist, Tom Shultz (1943-2017). Works by the artist, who passed away in his mid seventies, have been exhibited at a number of galleries, particularly in the Paso Robles area of central California. The piece is entirely hand painted (not silkscreened, which I at first thought a possibility) on a spongy, soft pulpboard, which the artist has also painted on the reverse (an abstract)...

African Baule Figure, 3" x 12"h, circa 1900. The Baule create art in several media, including wooden sculpture, gold and brass casting similar to their Asante ancestors, and mask and figure carving, which have been greatly influenced by their Senufo and Guro neighbors.
The Baule belong to the Akan peoples who inhabit Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire. Three hundred years ago the Baule people migrated westward from Ghana when the Asante rose to power...
An original very detailed watercolor drawing of a man who looks to be a commoner, drawn on paper laid on thin card or directly on card, 7 3/4" by 4 1/8" (14" by 11" in modern frame), signed at bottom with the distinctive signature of mid 19th century renowned academic painter and draftsman JEAN LOUIS-ERNST MEISSONIER (1815-1891). The drawing is finely crafted, the lone figure vignetted, the background empty. Meissonier was famous in Europe in his day, that fame buying a lavish lifestyle...
By the highly important German impressionist and expressionist artist LOVIS CORINTH (1858-1925) is this soft-ground etching, 9" by 6 1/2" inside the present mat, the size as framed 20" by 15 1/2", titled "Portrait of Hermann Struck", signed in pencil by the artist in the lower right margin and by the printer Heinrich Wetterroth at lower left margin (along with other difficult to decipher information, written in fine pencil), and dated in the plate at upper right "1911"...
A beautifully framed, plain beautiful oil on canvas painting, 15" by 18" (23" by 25 1/2" framed), the subject figures in a country landscape, painted skillfully in true impressionist style, by listed French artist EUGENE CHAFFANEL (1860-1929). The artist is Benezit-listed, though biographical information seems to be scarce. He hailed from the Nancy region of western France, and seems to have made a trip to New York in 1887. Chaffanel painted landscape, genre, and portraits...
Oil on canvas portrait of a middle aged man seen in profile, not signed on the front, possibly signed on the reverse, 20" by 16", unframed. The man appears to be a clerk in his work clothes, circa 1910 to mid 1930 perhaps. On the reverse written faintly on the canvas is "WM. HODES FRANKLIN" or similar--. Below that is what appears to be "BRACKMAN"...
Eighteenth Century Floral Study Watercolor 12”x7” on fine French paper
**One of two works by the artist in my shop** Oil on canvas, measuring 16" by 20" (22 1/2" by 26 1/2" as nicely framed), titled "Pond Farm" (and original $400 price) on the original Dalzell Hatfield label affixed to the backing. I do not see an actual signature on the painting itself but have not removed the backing board to search the reverse side. The painting is in excellent original condition...

From our African Collection: African Teke Figure from the Republic of Congo.
18" h.
“The Teke people settled in a territory lying across the Republic of Congo, the Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire) and Gabon. During the 15th century, they were integrated into the Tio kingdom, but attained independence in the 17th century. Today, they live in villages led by a clan elder known as the Mfumu, who answers to a hereditary land-chief called Mfumu na tzee...
From our African Collection: A Lwena Ceremonial Mask from Zambia, circa 1950 9 x 16" h
.
The Lwena people, also spelled Lovale,Luvale, Balovale, Lubale, as well as Lwena or Luena in Angola, are a Bantu ethnic group found in northwestern Zambia and southeastern Angola. They are closely related to the Lunda and Ndembu to the northeast, but they also share cultural similarities to the Kaonde to the east, and to the Chokwe and Luchazi, important groups of eastern Angola...
Something of a frustrating, mystery painting.......oil on canvas, 36" by 23 1/2" (44" by 31 1/2" framed), apparently unsigned, probably American but could also be European, the subject a view onto a small inner courtyard or air shaft, seen through an interior doorway. The work certainly exhibits a modernist touch in some spiky passages in the vegetation, and the choice of red/orange color contrasting with the other more somber tones...
Large folio size (19 1/2" by 24" inside the mat, 24 1/2" by 20" as framed) hand colored 19th century original vintage lithograph print (1867), titled at bottom "Horses at the Ford" by the iconic American print makers Currier and Ives. A great piece of Americana, this print is apparently rather scarce. Hand coloring in various shades of green, mostly, makes for a most attractive example. I have had an opportunity to examine this out of the frame...
