Watercolor on paper landscape painting of sheep at the edge of a forest, a small home in the distance across some ponds and lakes, signed at lower right corner by a talented Dutch immigrant to the United States, ADOLPH (also spelled ADOLF) VAN SPANJE (1868-1948). The artist is not widely listed at this time in art directories and online sites, but there is information about him on the net...

Edgar Nye (American, 1879-1943)
Hillside Landscape
Watercolor on paper, signed lower right
Painting size: 11.5” x 17” Unframed
Nye lived, worked and taught in Washington, DC for 58 years. While he may have been born in Richmond, VA, his love for the city earned him the distinction of a "native" son.
Nye was educated in public schools before entering the Corcoran School of Art at age 13...
Hand-colored page with an attractive woodcut showing heavily armed Amazons, who must have appeared very alien at the time...
Watercolor on paper painting of a scene in old historical Saint Augustine, Florida, 4 5/8" by 6 1/2" (9 1/2" by 11 1/2" framed) titled on reverse in another hand "Fatio House", and signed at lower left corner by the listed American artist ROY C. CLARK (1889-1956). Clark was born in the Berkshires of western Massachusetts, and died in Washington, D.C. Evidently he traveled widely, having studied with W. L...
Among several works I am offering by the artist, this is a set of EIGHT offset color prints after watercolor paintings **(ONLY FIVE ARE SHOWN IN THE PRIMARY IMAGE; EMAIL FOR IMAGES OF THE FINAL THREE)**, each hand signed in lower margin, and each titled, (each 10 1/2" by 13", unframed), by California master watercolor artist MILFORD ZORNES (1908-2008). Zornes is an icon in the world of California watercolor painting, which has come to be known as the "California Style"...

The treasure was hidden in the wake of the Alemannic incursions of the 3rd century AD.
Matthaeus Merian was commissioned to document the finds before they were melted down and distributed among the Swiss cantons of the time.
The large size plates were carefully decorated and inscribed...

A lovely highly impressionist oil on board painting of coffee pots and creamers on a table, apparently unsigned, and of vintage age, possibly 1930's or 1940's I believe. The work measures 14 1/2" by 15 1/4" (18" by 18 1/2" framed). On the reverse of the old board is written in old hand in pencil what appears as "Robert Swasey/327 Spring St./Portland Maine". I have looked for the name Robert Swasey in standard art search sites and have not located a known recognized painter by this name...
Oil on canvas laid on board painting, circa 1950, titled in artist hand on reverse "The Rail Fence", 13 1/2" by 17" (17 1/2" by 21" framed) signed at lower right by the artist MYRON CHESTER NUTTING (1890-1972). Nutting was born in Nevada. He became known in California for landscape and portrait works. He and his wife spent time painting in Cambria on the scenic Central Coast in 1939 and again from 1953-1955. Apparently he also spent time in Texas...
A group of THREE 19th century English botanical prints, two framed identically in gold with closed corners, the third framed in a different gold frame with beading. The matching pair measure 19 1/2" by 17 1/2" in the frames; the final piece slightly smaller at 19" by 16". The print in that latter piece, by artist Fitch, has horizontal creases, one sharp; the year "1846" is written in pencil at bottom edge...
Old circa 1950 painting on board of the majestic Grand Canyon in Arizona, apparently unsigned, measuring 17 3/4" by 22", plus pleasingly old patterned frame, 1 3/4" wide on a side. The artist had talent but the work is also fairly primitive, in a charming way. A lot of effort went into painting this. I would almost describe it as folk art. Materials suggest a late 1940's or early 1950's age. There's some wear on the frame especially at lower right corner...
This is an original etching, 11" by 16 1/2" (17" by 21" as framed), by American artist Kerr Eby (1889-1946). The title of the work is "Cattle Ford", and it was executed in 1945, in an edition of 100 apparently. Eby was born in Tokyo to Canadian missionaries but was in the United States by age 3. At 18 he went to New York City for art education, working for a lithographic firm to enhance his financial situation, gaining valuable experience that served him well later in life...
A highly detailed etching in brown ink, featuring canal-side classic old architecture of Amsterdam, 12 1/2" by 9 3/4" plus narrow wood frame, pencil signed at lower left margin by the very important Dutch-born 20th century artist WILLEM GERARD HOFKER (1902-1981). At right in pencil is "epreuve d'artiste" and "no. 24" in ink...
Classic mid 19th century print of a large bird perched on a branch, 20 5/8" by 14 7/8" inside a hand drawn ornate mat, 27" by 20 3/4" framed, with hand coloring of the subject. This print reminds of the Audubon period of ornithological art---in style and overall presentation. There is no indication as to artist, engraver or printer. The print, like many old Audubon examples, has been in a humid environment, as it is heavily foxed, especially at top right, but, really overall. This in a way a...
19th century. hand painted miniature on card, depicting a European woman adorned with flowers, the image measuring 2" x 1.5", mounted in a coin silver

Watercolor on heavy paper, 6 1/4" by 9", (9" by 11" as framed), unsigned, the subject a marble Parthenon-like classical ruined temple at right, several picturesquely dressed figures in the right foreground, and a cypress tree at left framing the scene. I would guess the age as circa mid 19th century. Unfortunately there is no signature nor other hint as to authorship. The paper is generally somewhat browned with advanced age, and the extreme left and right 1/2" or so is severely browned---evi...
Watercolor on paper of two spaniels, the hunter nearby in a wooded landscape, " by ", unframed, signed at lower left with monogram that resembles the monogram of noted American artist JAMES DAVID SMILLIE (1833-1909). This is obviously an American work, not European, but I cannot confirm that it's by the noted American artist James David Smillie. I researched the monogram and see the clear resemblance to that of Smillie. Regardless of authorship, this is a fine late 19th century drawing and sh...
Watercolor on paper, 17 1/2" by 23 1/4" inside the mat (22" by 28" in very complementary jet-black and silver framing), signed at lower right in pencil "Swanson" and dated there 2002. This handsome, elegant watercolor is by artist ROY E. SWANSON, obviously a skilled hand, though I cannot seem to actually find a listing for the artist. There is a listing for a RAY Swanson (Cowboy Artists of America), but this is not that artist. Regardless, the work is excellent, reminding one of the California...
A vintage portrait painting of a red-haired, middle-aged lady in circa late 1930's to 1940 style hat, 13" by 10", (22 1/2" by 19" framed), signed at lower right by listed Southern California artist BERTHA TOWNSEND COLER (1865-1948). The painting, oil on canvas laid on Masonite, exudes a very spontaneous, free, sketchy feeling that is quite appealing, demonstrating the skill of the artist. An original label still affixed to the reverse provides the title, "The Green Hat", original $45 price and...
Elegant, smart, modern composition of geometric forms, painted on canvas in a limited range of subdued colors, signed at lower right with initials "jmc". The painting dates to the 1970's or 1980's, most likely. Measuring 24 1/2" by 18 3/4" in narrow black wood framing, its heritage can be traced directly to the Suprematist movement launched in 1915 by Russian artist Kasimir Malevich. The radical abstract movement emphasized geometric forms in space including lines, squares and circles, painte...
Indonesian drawing of three seated figures conversing at a marketplace, three white chickens offered up for sale, painted circa late 1950's or early 1960's I believe, apparently unsigned, 12" by 16 1/4" inside the mat, 17" by 21 1/4" as framed. There is an old Rotterdam, Netherlands framer's sticker on the reverse. The art somewhat reminds of the work of the important Dutch/Indonesian master artist Rudolf Bonnet (1895-1978) but I do not believe the work by him. The artist has used watercolor...
Watercolor on paper, unframed, 13 3/4" by 21 3/4", the subject a New England coastal scene with rocks, distant sailboats, and a lighthouse on a headland, the work signed at lower left. This is a typical watercolor painting by the noted artist OTIS S. WEBER (1847-) of New England. Although he is listed, and works sell regularly at auction, not a lot seems to be known about Weber's life and career, but paintings dated as early as 1876 are known. He seems to have worked into the 20th century. O...
An interesting contemporary abstract painting on canvas, 25 1/4" by 25 1/4" as framed, signed illegibly at lower right corner, featuring blackish and reddish rectangles arranged in a manner suggesting the works of famed twentieth century American artist Mark Rothko. This stylish work will easily complement your modern or mid century interior. Condition is excellent. Probably dates to the 1980's or 1990's. Nice texturing and skilled blending techniques (edge blurring) is evident. The white, ...
An interesting work of the mid 1970's----original watercolor and crayon drawing of the freeway intersections and downtown towers of Los Angeles at the time, signed at lower right "John N" and dated 10-74. The piece measures 12 1/2" by 13" inside the mat and 19 1/2" by 19 1/2" in the period frame. This is not quite artist Wayne Thiebaud and his famed California elevated freeways, which are now seen as Pop Art works in and of themselves; but this artist had a modern vision and handled the subjec...
A vintage oil on canvas painting of a river canyon of the west or Southwest, circa 1950's, good-sized at 24" by 32" (32" by 40" in the likely original old charming frame), signed at lower right by artist Charles Crowder. I do not see a "listed" artist name that would correspond. The work much resembles that of California impressionist landscape artist James Merriam (1880-1951). Condition is excellent.
Vintage Cyrus Seymour painting of a box of candy . Painted on heavy art board and has a thin plastic cover over the art, good condition possibly was for a candy company's ad work. Signed "Descartes " no date but c 1960s . Size 17.5" by 17.5"
Recently acquired from a Southern California German-American family liquidating a household, are twenty-one watercolor paintings by "Uncle Max" (Markus "Max" Hansen, 1898-), featuring mostly Old World landscapes and street scenes, with a few interiors in the mix. Some are framed in wood, some unframed, some have glass, some do not, some are signed, some are not. The artist was talented but is unknown outside of the family. Born in 1898, he lived in Eppertshausen between Frankfurt and Darmstad...
