THREE hand colored French 19th century prints featuring early-day Japanese soldiers, each 9 1/4" by 6 3/8" inside the faded old violet mats, to which each is simply taped at top edge. The prints are unframed. Two have a dark foxing mark, and all are of sufficient age to have acquired the signs of age---paper toning, slight handling creases and so forth. Fresh mats and frames will display them properly and preserve them for another 150 or so years...

Swanson", dated there "84" This watercolor is by a skilled hand (see other works by him in my shop), though I cannot seem to find a listing for the artist. There is a listing for a RAY Swanson (Cowboy Artists of America), but this is not that artist...

HOWARD" and date "OCT. 74" on the stretcher. There is an African-American artist by the name Humbert Howard but this work does not resemble the work I see out there on the net...

Watercolor painting of a young Native American girl of the Southwest, 17 1/2" by 14 3/4" (23 1/2" by 21" framed), signed at lower right (somewhat indecipherably) "Martchenko". This is a sensitive portrait by an obviously talented observer. Martchenko's works appear from time to time in Southern California. Born in Oregon, she studied under Sergei Bongart and at the Otis Art Institute. Portraiture seems to have been a favorite of the artist, in both oil and watercolor...

Oil on canvas painting, 20" by 28" (24" by 32" framed), the subject a great clipper ship of the 19th century silhouetted against the setting sun (or dawn) on a calm sea. The painting is signed at lower left by the artist, William P. Lawrence and is dated below that either 1938 or 1928; difficult to discern. I don't see that he is a listed artist but obviously he was talented. The scene has a fine luminosity and clearly shows the painter's understanding of light and backlighting...

20th Century American School 1900-1999 American Artists This is an original watercolor and gouache painting, artist unknown, most likely American circa 1930. The image of what appears to be a writer or Poet giving a talk in a park setting. The image measures 8 1/4X5 1/4 inches. Nicely framed with archival materials. This work, done on a blue toned paper is in very nice condition, clean and bright.

Oil on canvas painting of an attractive brown-eyed brunette with floppy sun hat protecting her on a summer day, unframed, measuring 24" by 24". There is no signature but the artist was talented. The work is in very good condition, with just a bit of dark foreign matter at left edge as shown, likely removable. The painting would lend a contemporary, lively feel to home, beach house, or dorm room.

A 1978-dated, oil on board painting of a Mid-Century looking building, apparently under construction, in an urban setting, signed at lower right "JAN BAZANOWSKI". The work, 17" by 23" inside the double mat and 24" by 30" in gold metal frame (no glass) is in excellent condition. Frame has some scratches and mat is soiled and could be replaced. The painting is simply very interesting, and unusual; would work well in a Mid-Century setting...

A rare woodcut color print of exotic cacti in small pots on a yellow and white cloth, 9 3/8" by 9 3/8" inside the innermost mat, 18 1/4" by 17 1/2" as framed, pencil signed at lower right by the artist, EMMA (EMILIE LEONORE) MEYER (1859-1921). The paper use is an exceedingly delicate tissue-like paper. This is a finely crafted work by an artist from Denmark, who obviously deserves to be better known...

Oil on canvas painting of a tawny autumn landscape,15 3/4 " by 20 3/4" (20 3/4" by 25" framed), not signed on the front, but bearing a tattered label with an apparent name beginning with "Eve..", and dedicated on the reverse of the canvas in 1933. The reverse inscription says "Merry Christmas 1933/to Lulu (XXX--unreadable)/old friend (XXX---unreadable). This might be a California landscape, but it would be difficult to state that with any certainty...

ONE OF TWO BY THE SAME ARTIST IN MY SHOP, IDENTICAL SIZE AND FRAMING, oil on board, 18" by 14" (22" by 18" framed), signed at upper right "LEE WILLKE". This work shows a Plains Indian with full roach and faintly mischievous smile. The complex surface is heavily worked. Both of these whimsical works likely date to about the 1950's, and were found at the same location in Maine. I have not been able to locate an artist of this name.
