This is an offset poster issued by the Long Beach Museum of Art in 1984, for an exhibition of that year of the works of the conceptual and abstract artist JENNIFER LOSCH BARTLETT (1941-). Measuring 24 1/2" by 33 1/2" (32" by 40 1/2" in its blond wood quality frame), this is a very clean and fresh work ready for the wall. The complementary signature makes for an affordable way to approach the work of a woman artist whose works have exceeded $100,000 at major auctions in New York and London...
This is a beautiful impressionist still life of pink roses in a glass pitcher, signed at lower left in Cyrillic and dated 1994 by the noted Ukrainian artist VASILY PONIKAROV (1929-). Measuring 26" by 18 3/4" (33" by 26" as framed in pink metal frame and matching mat), it is a powerfully impressionistic work by a master of watercolor art. Ponikarov was born near Odessa and was exhibiting his art by 1965...
**Nicely executed watercolor painting of giant trees such as sequoia or redwood, deep in the forest interior, measuring 18" by 12 1/2", 25" by 19" framed, signed at lower left by the talented listed Japanese artist FUKUTARO TERAUCHI (1891-). Terauchi was born December 9,1891. In 1910 he entered the private school Kiyoteru Kuroda, and later became a member of the Hakuda Association...
An example of the circa 1870's Currier and Ives American lithograph "Summer in the Woods", 11 3/4" by 16" inside the mat, 17 1/4" by 21 1/4" as framed. The print is in good antique condition (not examined out of frame) with a faint damp stain at upper left margin and some foxing and slight discolorations at lower area...

Accomplished drawing of a young mother holding her baby, painted and with pencil underneath, unsigned, but on the reverse is a printed label of the Kherwadi Social Welfare Association of Mumbai, India, giving the name of the artist as Savita Shershing Ashiwal, age 9 years. The work being so advanced, it is difficult to believe that it could have been created by a young child...
A group of three small watercolors of scenes in rural Hambleden, England, by late 20th century English artist (Mrs.) P. Begley. The three each measure 5 1/2" by 8" (10 1/2" by 12 1/2" identically framed). Each is signed with conjoined initials PB in lower left corner and the artist wrote her address and titles on reverse backing. The works probably date to circa 1980. Pleasing scenes of the classic, peaceful countryside of England...
Pastel on paper, unframed, 14 1/2" by 12 1/4", signed at lower right with the initials "DP". This is a drawing of the distinctive 10,000+ ft. mountain of the Cascades Range in Washington state, Mt. Baker. The artist was obviously skilled in the use of pastel, but I am not able to say who the artist might have been. I thought it could possibly be Dewitt Parshall, California artist, but don't know if he worked in the Northwest...
A wild crayon and pencil on paper drawing of bizarre abstracted forms that might be described as "organic", the drawing tacked at four corners to a larger board that is itself painted decoratively. The work, 22" by 18" framed, is signed with initials at lower right that could be "BK" and the date is "02". This was found in Southern California. The artist worked a lot of hours to produce this. Both drawing and gold frame are in very good condition.
Etching of an old style bridge spanning a small body of water, signed in pencil at lower right and signed in the plate there and dated 1962 by well listed Hungarian artist ISTVAN BALDIZSAR (1897-1984)...
Here is a classic old painting on gray academy board, the subject roses in a vase, 20 1/2" by 14 1/4" as framed, signed at lower right "M Say" or similar. It likely dates to circa 1900, at a time when young ladies were expected to take up painting as a domestic skill, and still life of roses was always a most popular subject. Today these works are sought after by those decorating in the shabby chic style. The work has some flaws typical of century-old works, including soiling, minor scuffs, ...
Oil on board painting of trees in a landscape, 11" by 9" in narrow original frame, signed at lower right by listed artist "A. KLUG". The painting is executed in a very impressionist hand, and is quite lovely, but is also very dirty. A professional cleaning would really be well worthwhile investment. The frame being old is showing its age, with losses as seen. The artist is listed in Davenport's dictionary of artists but there does not seem to be much information available on him or her.
Oil on canvas, 15 1/4" by 18 1/2" (22" by 25" as frame), the subject a copper or ceramic tub filled with red flowers , all against a simple background. The painting is not signed on the front but on the reverse is "Yerda Werkel" and "von Kurtz" and "1.9.46". So we have likely a German, Swiss or Austrian artist who would have painted this soon after the end of the war. I don't see a listing for the artist but she was talented. The painting has a few losses and shallow scrapes that could use i...
A large lithograph print, the sheet 28 1/2" by 22 3/4", unframed, signed at center right with his monogram "JR" and star symbol, dated there 1950. This is a work of American illustrator artist JAMES REYNOLDS (1896-1996). The imagery of flowers and leaves reminds of the work of American twentieth century artist Charles Burchfield. Reynolds is often confused in art auction records and biographies with western American contemporary artist James Reynolds.
Something of a mystery piece......a black and white photo, 12 5/8" by 11" including thin margins on three sides, (in a temporary protective-only frame), unsigned and unattributed, in a frame which bears old Christie's Los Angeles photo department sale and lot information that does not correspond with the image (I checked with Christie's photographs dept). The image of the moving train is in black and white though there is a hint of a pink/violet tint in a portion of the train sides. I am not a...
One of dozens of drawings by this artist that I recently acquired, (ask to see others, not shown in my shop) this is a fine image in soft pencil and ink on paper, the drawing itself 10" by 13 1/2", in a simple frame without mat, signed with initials at right and dated '65, by California and Massachusetts listed artist DAISY MARGUERITE HUGHES (1882-1968). Hughes was born and died in Los Angeles but in between she spent much time in the Provincetown art colony on Cape Cod. Hughes exhibited widely ...
A PAIR of ink on paper drawings, one of a young woman reclining, (7 1/2" by 10") the other a young boy seated cross-legged (8 1/2" by 6 1/2"), both signed by the noted American actor, accomplished artist and writer/novelist, PETER MARK RICHMAN (1927-). One is dated 1966, the other inscribed "For Al". Richman, now 90 years old, has an extensive biography, all visible online. Born in Philadelphia, by the mid 1950's he was already acting and shortly thereafter was shuttling between the coasts, w...
A black and white poster from the Susan Spiritus Gallery of Newport Beach, California, for an exhibition held in the spring of 1983 of the works of noted American photographer HENRY GILPIN (1922-2011), the poster **hand signed** by Gilpin at bottom center. The image featured is perhaps the best known photo by Gilpin, "Highway #1", the world-famous, dramatic coastal highway hugging the Central California coast. Gilpin, born in Ohio, served as a pilot in Europe during World War II. Following t...
This is an unframed study in pencil by a noted figure in eastern American art, XANTHUS RUSSELL SMITH (1839-1929). The artist, at age 85, signed it with his distinctive "XS" monogram at lower left, and wrote "Painted in oil this size", and dated it Nov. 29- 1924. The sketchbook paper measures 6 5/8" by 9". It would be interesting to pair this with the oil version, in order to gain insight into the artist's artistic process. The work has survived in reasonable condition, with some light browni...
Japanese woodblock print by Katsuyuki Nishijima (b. 1945) depicting a shop front. This is an original, kanji titled, pencil-signed, limited edition print numbered 21/500 in the bottom margin. Late 20th century. Paper size 17" x 12 3/8" (image: 15 7/8" x just under 11 1/4"). Full margins. Excellent condition. There is one small piece of tape at the top back margin edge.
Watercolor painting of a street and pedestrian promenade on Union Street, in Bath, England, signed by artist Tim Fish. The work is dated December 9,1998 and signed there. Measurements are 7 3/4" by 11 3/4" inside the mat (13" by 17" in simple wood frame). There is presently no glass, but the work is in excellent condition. A nicely executed work by an artist who obviously is familiar with watercolor technique.
Oil on canvasboard, 12" by 16" (17" by 21" as framed), signed at lower right by artist CURT PAULSON. I do not see a listing but the artist had a skilled hand. The style reminds a bit of California desert painters William Darling or Fred Chisnall. There is impasto, vigorous brush stroke, and a grayish blue light over the scene. Apparently original whitish antiqued frame completes this ready for the wall package. Condition is excellent.
Pencil on paper drawing of a young man, in true 1930's American Scene style. The work measures 12 1/4" by 9 1/2" inside the present mat, the full sheet extending under the mat (some of the drawing is hidden by present mat) 14 1/2" by 11 3/8". The work is unsigned. I would imagine that the artist would be someone listed, judging from the quality and sensitivity of the portrait. The paper has yellowed with time, and the area under the present mat is a different shade from the exposed area, so ...
For your rustic lake cabin, second home, or Adirondack style interior, a well executed pastel drawing of a lake landscape with tent and figures, 17 1/2" by 29 1/2" (21" by 34" as simply framed), signed at lower right by noted American pastel artist ANDREW GUNDERSON (1888-1964). Gunderson is grouped today with such pastellists as William Chandler and Glatthaar. These artists around the turn of the century and the early years of the 20th century produced large numbers of original pastel landscapes...
A painting on light blue illustration board, sizable at 24" by 36" including its thin strip frame, signed at lower right by artist B. G. Dorsey. The subject is a white classic New England home with green shutters, pictured in early autumn, the trees turning colors. A lone figure seems to knit at the side of the house, a rowboat is tied up at the convenient dock, and a sailing craft and the ocean beyond appear at left. The idealized scene is classic Americana. It appears to be after American ...
Small oil on board painting of houses at left, feathery trees occupying the right hand side of the composition, unsigned, 8" by 11 1/2" (11 1/2" by 15" in mid 20th century frame). The painting reminds one of the Dutch Old Masters though it was very likely executed in the 19th century, perhaps in England. It shows evidence of its age, with soiling, a missing fleck at right center (the white spot) and some smallish scrapes in sky at upper left. Restoration would easily take care of all these is...
Pencil signed color print, 1992, issued by Greenwich Workshop, numbered also in pencil 15856/48000, by the noted contemporary American western artist BEV DOOLITTLE (1947-). The print is titled "Eagle Heart" and shows a Native American Indian chief on a white horse in a carefully arranged late autumn landscape, the snow patches on the rocks, in shadow, shown as an electric blue color, the central subject standing out dramatically. Doolittle is said by some to be a "camouflage" artist, arranging...
A vintage oil on board painting of an impossibly endowed southwestern desert scene, (possibly Arizona, since the saguaro grows natively only there) signed at lower right with initials "AHS". The painting, 14" by 18" (19" by 23" including linen covered surface around the painting) likely dates to the 1960's or early 1970's. The artist possessed a primitivist style, almost a naive style, placing into this idealized scene saguaro cacti, other, blooming cacti; ocotillo, agave, and all manner of ot...
In the style of popular Thomas Kinkade or Marty Bell, this is an original oil on canvas, 11" by 14" (17" by 20" framed), the subject a cozy cottage-like house set in a flowering garden, the welcoming lights all on. The painting is signed at lower left "N LaFond". If you enjoy the Kinkade style but would like an original work instead of a print, you may well like this piece. Condition is excellent, frame has a little wear.
A vintage woodcut print in black with touches of yellow and red in the windows of the picturesque seaside structures, unsigned, titled in the image "NOEL", white speckles (sprayed?) indicating snowflakes, 12 1/2" by 9 1/2" framed. The scene resembles Maine villages such as Port Clyde or Castine. Likely a work from that region, circa 1940's, possibly 1930's. I opened up the backing and found no further information.
An oil on panel painting of a red covered bridge in a mountain landscape, a village at left center, 13" by 19 1/2" (16" by 22" framed), signed at lower right by artist Ed Mifflin. I do not see a listing for this name. The scene likely shows Vermont or Maine; possibly there are covered bridges in hilly southern Ohio that might fit. In any event the circa 1960 work is very poetic. The black panel on which this is painted was not meant for art use, leading one to suspect that the artist was a t...
Oil on Masonite panel painting of a thicket of trees in the snow, 16" by 12", 19 1/4" by 15 1/2" framed, signed at lower left by artist S C Swiderski and dated there '86 with copyright symbol. The bare trees are accompanied by a lone pine or spruce which gives a bit of green color to an otherwise silvery white/blue palette. The impressionist work is very attractive and it is in excellent condition. Note how the artist used the wooden end of the brush to create a groove in the wet paint. The ...
Oil on canvas painting, signed at lower left "Charles T. Harris", late 20th century, the subject a red rock dramatic cliff of the Southwest, framed artistically by a large overhanging branch arching in from the right side. The work is very clean and ready to hang. This came from a local estate. The artist is talented but from what I can tell not listed. Size is 20" by 30" plus 2 1/2" wide on a side wood frame.
Original etching on paper watermarked "France" (probably Arches paper), 9 3/4" by 7 7/8" (image only), and the sheet with at least 1 1/8" margins (up to nearly 2" at right), pencil signed at lower right by the noted American printmaker LUIGI LUCIONI (1900-1988). This is no doubt a Vermont landscape scene, as Lucioni's prints largely deal with the classic mountain scenery of that state. This example is in good condition if you are seeking a pleasing print to frame, but it is not in pristine con...
Large matted watercolor of abstract landscape by Yngve Olsen (1905-2000), American Modernist, one of many watercolors painted in the Southwest in the 1940s and 1950s.
Measures: Mat is 22" x 17" and watercolor sheet is 16 3/4" x 13".
Like many of his works from this collection, it is not signed, but is guaranteed to be by this artist.
Contemporary archival matting with glassine over painting, the mat is a soft creamy yellow tone.
Painted in the mid century modernist style, very much in the ...
A fine woodcut print on Japan type thin, delicate paper, 8 1/2" by 6 1/2" inside the mat, no frame, signed in pencil at lower right and dated there 1931, a monogram in the printed image at lower left, adn inscribed "To Hal" at lower left, by the well listed artist IGNATZ SAHULA-DYCKE (1900-1982). The dramatic subject is mysterious and difficult to describe: a woman, perhaps somewhat sinister or even possibly Death, comforts a young girl, as a younger boy looks on from the right lower corner. ...
A vintage mid 20th century watercolor painting of a sun-washed Mediterranean village including white church, red roofed buildings and mule-drawn cart, signed at lower left by artist "Costi" (or similar). The work measures 13" by 9 3/4" (19 1/2" by 16 1/2" in attractive silvery frame). Watercolor and frame are in excellent condition.
Apparently unsigned watercolor on heavy paper painting of an arid landscape in the American Southwest, including a distant mountain, barbed wire fencing at a dirt crossroads, and fading evening clouds, 14" by 17 1/2" as framed in a faux burl frame. When I first saw the image I was reminded of some of the watercolor art of Peter Hurd---the memorable scenes he painted of New Mexico. There is no evidence that he painted this one, but perhaps the artist was inspired by Hurd's imagery. The waterco...
Nicely executed impressionist pastel drawing of coastal rocks and surf, 9" by 12" (14 1/2" by 17 1/2" framed), unsigned. This came from a collection of Northern California art, including pastel drawings by Carl Sammons, so I would at least entertain the possibility that he could have been the artist, but alas, this is truly unsigned. The work is on paper laid on a board. Condition is excellent with just a little contact with the old style non-glare glass, which should be replaced. The photos...
Oil on canvas laid on board paint of daffodils or jonquils in a painted ceramic vase, 16 1/2" by 13" framed, signed at lower right "N. Green". The painting I think if American and looks to date to circa 1940's or early 1950's at the latest. There is no apparent biography for an artist matching this name, but he or she was clearly talented. I opened the back to see if there might be more information but the red board to which the canvas is affixed is itself glued in the center to the backing c...
A circa 1910 small oil on canvas landscape of a forest pond, signed at lower right "O. Sch". This 3 1/2" by 5 1/2" work (9 1/2" by 11 1/2" framed) came from a local family of German heritage. Their art, some of which I acquired, came with the family from the old country. This work has some condition issues, as the canvas over the decades has buckled, with sharp horizontal roughly parallel "ridges" now apparent, as well as craquelure. The canvas was laid years ago on a panel and evidently it h...
Nicely drawn watercolor and pencil work titled "The Entrance" on backing, signed at lower left by German-born contemporary artist and author "Renata Zerner", and dated 1972. The piece measures 17" by 11" and 20 1/4" by 17 1/4" in the period aluminum frame. The image is quite mysterious and dreamy, a male and a female torso standing on either side of a portal of sorts. The artist has left it to the viewer to decide exactly where "The Entrance" leads. Condition is excellent. Zerner was born ...
A woodblock print on hand-made paper, the subject a female nude, as originally published in 1921 in the French language literary and art magazine Les Cahiers d'Aujourd'hui. According to information affixed to the backing, this is "original work done on hand laid paper", which was "string-tied" into the hand-bound booklet. CARL HOFER (1878-1955) is today considered a German Expressionist; his finest paintings have exceeded $500,000 at auctions. Hofer was in Paris from 1908 to 1913, after which...
Impressionist painting of a small brook in a landscape, bordered by trees, the season perhaps early spring, suggested by the white ground-hugging flowers in the foreground. The unsigned work, on board, measures 19" by 14 1/2" (21 3/4" by 17" in attractive gold frame). The artist could be American, or European...there is old pencil notation on the reverse in American handwriting referring to varnish type. The work was recently cleaned and two hairline horizontal scratches were attended to. T...
Photo print, 22 3/4" by 19 1/8" inside the mat (31" by 27" as framed), pencil signed at lower right by the noted artist of the American West JOE BEELER (1931-2006), and numbered at lower left 58/300. The subject is a monument to the American West: a cowboy on his horse, a butte in the background as he pursues stray cattle with his lasso on a spring or late winter day. This is a clean print and is ready for the wall. Not knowing the print's colors, I feel it possible there might be a touch o...
Haitian art is rightly popular for its color and exotic subject matter. This little painting, 9 1/4" by 7 1/4', set into a larger quality frame/mat, 22" by 19 3/4", depicts a thatched roof hut, figures carrying items on their heads, and lush tropical mountains and vegetation. The artist signed his name "Serge Louis" and the date 1995. The painting is exceptionally clean and ready to hang on the wall.
A gouache on paper painting of a vase with white flowers, blue on white plates, green bowl with cherries, a decorative leaded window beyond, the work signed at lower right corner with what appears as "Louise Brentnall" and dated there 44 (or, I think less likely, 77). The piece measures 9 1/4" by 7" (12 3/4" by 10 3/4" in simple strip frame). I do not see an artist by this name, if I am reading the name correctly. I thought it might read "Louise Brumback", but that artist died in 1929. So, ...
Coastal seascape painting on pebbly surface old gray art board, likely the California coast but possibly Maine, circa early twentieth century, unsigned, measuring 7" by 17" (14 1/2" by 25" in its interesting blackish with reddish design frame). The work and framing is very presentable as-is, with just very slight wear to the frame. At the left edge one can see where the portion hidden by framing is fresher in color; therefore we can state that a cleaning would remove the somewhat yellowed varn...
An example of the 1976 poster for the Pasadena Art Center College of Design exhibition of the works of then-already famous American fashion and portrait photographer RICHARD AVEDON (1923-2004), measuring 26 1/4" by 19 1/2", unframed. The stark black and white imagery features photos of artist Willem de Kooning at his Long Island studio (1969) and dancer John Martin (1975). Avedon hand-signed in marker with his typical sweeping, dramatic signature, at lower center. The work was found unframed,...
This hand carved rock crystal snuff bottle is 2 ½ inches tall, 1 ¼ inches wide and 1 inch thick. It depicts a bird resting on a small branch of a gourd plant. The snuff bottle is well hollowed and polished. It has a cone shaped agate top. The crystal has natural grains and impurities.
Wood engraving on paper, unframed and in a shrink wrap sleeve, 14" by 9 1/4" inside the present mat, signed in the print at lower left and titled at bottom "Approach of the British Pirate Alabama", by the famed American artist WINSLOW HOMER (1836-1910). The well-known image was published on April 25, 1863. This is a classic example of Homer's Civil War period wood engravings in Harper's Bazaar newspaper, which was one of the most avidly followed periodicals in a now unimaginable age when elect...
This is a work by highly regarded American artist THOMAS WILLOUGHBY NASON (1889-1971), titled in pencil "Rockport" at lower left and signed at lower right "TWNason (M.W.N.)". This would appear to be a posthumous signature by a relative after the artist's death. This example measures 4 1/4" by 6 1/4" inside the mat and 11 1/4" by 13 1/4" framed. The print appears to be in generally good condition with some scattered foxing, especially in the margin area. The burl wood framing is simple and attra...
A modern, stylish abstract in violets and blue-green colors, nicely framed ("floating") with inner fillet and very complementary silvery outer frame, signed at lower right by artist MARC BENSIMON (1926-) and dated there 1982. The work measures 18" by 12" (28" by 22 1/2" framed). Surprisingly, considering the quality of the work, I am unable to locate information on the artist. Condition is excellent, just the slightest wear on the frame. Very decorative sleek work for the home.
Oil on canvas painting of a Parisian street as it would have looked during the "Belle Epoque" era around the turn of the century, 12" by 16" and 3" wide frame, unsigned. This impressionistic work is an original hand painted work, not a print or reproduction of any type. There is a signature that appears to read "Liotta" at lower right, rather hard to see. This is a decorative piece that should enhance any traditional interior setting. Condition of the painting is excellent, and I note very s...
Carroll Thayer Berry is a familiar name in artistic circles in the state of Maine, as he was an artist, illustrator and photographer there for many decades. Born in New Gloucester, he grew up in Portland and there became enamored of the sea and seagoing. After study at the University of Michigan (naval architecture) he worked for engineering firms in New York and Portland, then still as a young man worked on murals in administrative buildings in the Panama Canal Zone. After study at the Penns...
One of dozens of drawings by this artist that I recently acquired, (ask to see others, not shown in my shop) not many with any color, this is a fine image in soft pencil and a little color crayon on paper, the drawing itself 12" by 18 3/4", in an oak frame without mat, signed at lower left by California and Massachusetts listed artist DAISY MARGUERITE HUGHES (1882-1968). Hughes was born and died in Los Angeles but in between she spent much time in the Provincetown art colony on Cape Cod. Hughes ...
A contemporary painting in Old Master style, the subject a Dutch street scene with no less than eight figures, a church in the center background. The unframed 24" by 20" oil on canvas is signed at lower right corner "W. Caufield" (or "Canfield"). Note the attention to detail in the cobblestones and stone buildings (which are snow-dusted). The style derives from classic Dutch Old Masters and 19th century painters such as Cornelis Springer, Adrianus Eversen, and others. Condition is excellent....
PAIR of framed Paris scenes on board, one showing Notre Dame and the Seine, the other a street scene with a 1930's car and figures, each signed "Montal" at lower right. I would guess these are tourist pieces in the Montmartre painters tradition, probably dating to the 1950's or so. At 13 1/2" by 7 1/2" framed they are identical in size, and they are framed identically as well, though there is wear to each frame, showing as gold areas against a darker background. These are quite decorative and...
