A wild crayon and pencil on paper drawing of bizarre abstracted forms that might be described as "organic", the drawing tacked at four corners to a larger board that is itself painted decoratively. The work, 22" by 18" framed, is signed with initials at lower right that could be "BK" and the date is "02". This was found in Southern California. The artist worked a lot of hours to produce this. Both drawing and gold frame are in very good condition.

Apparently unsigned watercolor on heavy paper painting of an arid landscape in the American Southwest, including a distant mountain, barbed wire fencing at a dirt crossroads, and fading evening clouds, 14" by 17 1/2" as framed in a faux burl frame. When I first saw the image I was reminded of some of the watercolor art of Peter Hurd---the memorable scenes he painted of New Mexico. There is no evidence that he painted this one, but perhaps the artist was inspired by Hurd's imagery...

A vintage woodcut print in black with touches of yellow and red in the windows of the picturesque seaside structures, unsigned, titled in the image "NOEL", white speckles (sprayed?) indicating snowflakes, 12 1/2" by 9 1/2" framed. The scene resembles Maine villages such as Port Clyde or Castine. Likely a work from that region, circa 1940's, possibly 1930's. I opened up the backing and found no further information.

Carroll Thayer Berry is a familiar name in artistic circles in the state of Maine, as he was an artist, illustrator and photographer there for many decades. Born in New Gloucester, he grew up in Portland and there became enamored of the sea and seagoing. After study at the University of Michigan (naval architecture) he worked for engineering firms in New York and Portland, then still as a young man worked on murals in administrative buildings in the Panama Canal Zone...

A nicely painted oil on panel, 10" by 9 1/2" (15 1/2" by 14 3/4" as framed), the subject a stone wall surrounding an estate, with an entry portal, the word "Robe" at lower right, and "MLM" at left as presumably the signature. On the reverse is an old label from a framer in Mulhouse (eastern France near the Swiss border and Basel), and pencil writing "M Mougot" (or, "Maugot", or "Mangot", as a possible full name of the artist)...

Traditional watercolor still life of roses, yellow daffodils and maybe some dogwood, arranged in a white vase against a sketchily defined background, 20" by 22 1/2" (27" by 30 3/4" framed), apparently unsigned, though a number "1432" appears at lower right corner under the mat (I do NOT think it says 1932). The paper was laid on a board long ago. I think this dates to the 1940's or so; the hand was trained. Condition is excellent and this is ready for the wall.

Nineteenth century English hunting scene after the noted English artist who specialized in equestrian, racing, coaching and hunting scenes HENRY ALKEN (1785-1851). Watercolor on paper painting of an old wooden church of northern New Mexico, signed at lower right by artist ROSS PAXTON (1931-2003). The painting is very impressionistic. Paxton was born in rural northeast Oregon and went to college in Albuquerque, and later lived in New Jersey, furthering his art career in New York City. An original watercolor drawing of a familiar California theme: surfers at the beach, with lifeguard tower, palms, and two parked classic late 1940's Woodies vehicles. The work is signed at lower left "Dry......" ("Drysbock", or similar?) and measures 4 1/2" by 6 1/2". It comes matted but with no frame and glass. Likely is a contemporary work. Old oil on canvas laid on board landscape painting of a steep-sided canyon, framed by tall foreground trees, the work signed at very bottom left center (hidden by frame) "H. Baumgartner". Measurements are 16" by 12" and 18 1/2" by 14 1/2" in old wood framing. I would guess the age as circa 1930's or 1940's. While there are German artists that would correspond to this name, their work is unlike this piece. It was found here in Los Angeles, so this could well be a California painting by an art...

The work is in gouache on paper on board, 10 1/2" by 13", signed at lower left, the subject a split rail fence in a brushy late autumn subdued landscape, This has a frame, of sorts, but it is old and cheap and falling apart. A circa 1960's vintage oil on Masonite painting, 30" by 18" (36 1/2" by 24 1/2" as framed), unsigned, the subject a peaceful creek or marsh land area in late autumn, one tree in full autumnal colors. This is a very nicely painted work, which could benefit from a light cleaning, but you would not have to have that done. Condition is excellent, frame has a bit of wear consistent with age. The artist handled the light and reflections beautifully.

A painting of the California desert, painted in impressionist style, oil on canvasboard, 14" by 18", unframed, titled on reverse in old hand, "Palm Desert Cal. Smoke Trees".
