A printed Marriage Blessing, with adjacent watercolor painting of flowers at left and a waterfall with bridge (resembles Multnomah Falls, Oregon) at right...
"William Hogarth" Martin Folkes, Esq.
The Works of William Hogarth" as published by Baldwin, Cradock and Joy in 1822 with the original plates restored by James Heath, engraver to His Majesty. The Heath edition was the last to print directly from Hogarth's original engraved plates. All William Hogarth prints appearing after this date are copies of these original graphic works of art. Heath edition 1822 An original copperplate engraving — over 195 years old. Sheet size: approx...
Print of the palace entrance in the Mayan city of Uxmal in Yucatan, Mexico.
Designed by Jean Arnould Leveil (1806-1866) after the drawing (sepia ink and wash on wove paper) of Frederic Catherwood (1799-1854) from 1843, entitled: Archway, Casa del Gobernador, Uxmal, Yucatan.
Engraved by Jean Baptiste Marie Bury.
The print was edited as fourth of twelve depictions of the ruins of Uxmal in the appendix of volume 4 in: Jules Gailhabaud...
In the style of noted and popular late 19th century/early 20th century pastel artist WILLIAM CHANDLER, this is a nicely executed work featuring purple grapes, a sectioned orange, a peach in the back, and some seeds and grape leaves. Measuring 10 3/4" by 14" (15 1/2" by 18 1/2" as framed), signed "MAYER" at lower right, I have been unable to match this up with a listed artist, but the work, dating to as late as 1930 or so, is very decorative and folky and in excellent condition, as is the frame.
One of two works by the artist in my shop, this is an etching on paper, 8 3/4" by 6 5/8" sheet, signed in pencil at lower right margin "PHILIP KAPPEL". This is a fine etching of a pair of wind-sculpted pine trees on an exposed knoll, by a well regarded artist most associated with Connecticut, where he was born and where he died. Kappel's work includes a wide variety of subjects in painting and the graphic arts...
Watercolor painting of yellow roses on their prickly stems, 11" by 7 3/4" (16 1/2" by 12 3/4" framed), unsigned, circa late 19th century or early 20th. There is an old framer's label on the reverse backing from Boston. Condition is good, mat should be replaced, as well as old-style acidic old sawn wood backing boards. The mat edges did leave browning to mark their presence but that would be hidden completely by a new mat.
American circa 1910 or at least early twentieth century pastel on paper drawing of grapes, apples and a banana, 17" by 20 3/4" framed in an oval, unsigned. The work is typical of pastel still life of the period, though I do not believe it by the "Chandler" workshop. Modest homes of the period were lucky to have an original work of art rather than a print. This one has survived in very good condition...
Small decorative oil on canvas of a scene in Thailand with small boats, a figure paddling one of them, two ducks, and a house on a shore, 6" by 9" (9 1/2" by 12 1/4"), signed at lower right "Sak" or "Yak". Probably tourist art, this is nicely framed and the mat is clean, making for a decorative and inexpensive Asian accent for the home.
A 3-1/2" long and 3-7/8" high vintage Inuit stone carving of a bird. This carving is signed by Josie Pappy E-9-861 (JOSIE PAMIUTU PAPIALUK 1918-1996). This item is in excellent vintage condition with no cracks, chips, losses, damage or repairs - some scrapes, which occur with this type of stone. All items are thoroughly and conservatively graded and all condition issues are noted; all items are secondhand and may have slight signs of gentle use. Tracked packet air post to the U.S...
Small oil on canvas laid on board painting of a desert, mid to late 20th century, 4 1/2" by 6 1/2" (11 1/2" by 10" framed), signed at lower right by California desert painter KENNETH WALFORD. This is a rather typical example of the work of this artist. I have handled a number of Walford's works. Most feature desert landscapes. Biographical information on the artist seems to be scarce at this time. The painting is lightly soiled, linen liner is stained at upper right.
A small late 20th century watercolor titled on reverse label "Brazeau River", signed lower right with initials "MH". The work measures 5" by 3 1/4" inside the mat and 9" by 7" as framed. The Brazeau River is 130 miles in length and runs in a generally easterly direction from the high Canadian Rockies of Alberta, through the foothills and towards the plains where it merges with the North Saskatchewan River...
Naive painting of peasant figures in traditional clothing, sheep, llamas, birds and snow-capped mountains, signed at lower left by artist Inez Zodqui and titled "ECUADOR" at lower center. The small painting measures only 6" by 8" but there is a lot going on in this small space. The primitive art style is popular with tourists to the region. Condition is excellent. Frame if you wish or hang as-is.
Unsigned watercolor landscape painting, late 19th century American origin, the subject a chilly shoreline including snow-covered shacks, two figures, and a small overturned boat in winter storage, measuring 11" by 21" inside the mat (16" by 25" as framed). This is a primitive work, the figures a bit small and out of scale, and therefore a charming work, rather typical of late nineteenth century American watercolor by self-taught artists. CONDITION: Foxing in the sky, as shown, otherwise good...
Old watercolor on paper painting, a study of trees by a lake, the artist likely American, circa 1920's, 13 1/4" by 8 1/2" inside the old mat, possibly signed at extreme lower right corner but it is indecipherable. There are old framer's instructions on the reverse side. The work was found framed and the frame is possibly available to the purchaser at no extra charge, but it is worn and tired. A fresh framing job will do wonders for this fine old watercolor painting.
By Los Angeles artist AKOP TASHCHYAN (1949-), this is a 2009 line drawing, 12" by 13" (16 1/4" by 20 1/4" framed), titled by the artist "NUDES". Signed at upper left and again signed by the artist on the reverse board. Tashchyan was born in Yerevan, the capital of Armenia. and came to the United States in the late 1980's. Always talented as a child, his father did not encourage his artistic pursuits...
Late 19th or early 20th century American watercolor of several small sailing craft off a dock, signed at lower right with what appears as "L. Hart" or similar. (There might be a "18" below the signature---possibly as in 1918, but it is difficult to make out with any certainty). The work measures 9 3/4" by 8" (14 3/4" by 13" framed). Let's call the artist a talented amateur who created a pleasant scene. Condition is good. Gilded oak framing has light wear but is complementary to the art...
Silkscreen print by Hopi artist Kyrat Tuvahoema (1914-1942). Entitled "Tsep Kachina Deer Dancer", the print is accompanied by a card reading "Kyrat Tuvahoema was born on the mesa of Old Oraibe in the heart of the Hopi country in 1914...
A nicely painted and peaceful 1920s-30s watercolour of a winter scene with a deer. This 5-1/2" x 3-5/8" sight size picture is in the original gilt embossed wood 11 x 9" frame with a gold mat. It is unsigned but looks like our other painting by L. Livingston (our stock number 5727), and it is in excellent original condition with no chips, cracks, fading, tears, staining, foxing, losses, damage or repairs. All items are thoroughly and conservatively graded and all condition issues are noted; a...
