A very colorful 19th century Mexican retablo depicting a scene called "L'Alegoria de la Redencion." The composition depicts the elongated body of the crucified Christ spanning Heaven and Hell. God, making the sign of blessing and the Holy Spirit (in the form of a dove) watch from the upper section, while condemned souls in supplication watch from the flames of Hell at the bottom. Charles Brooking, 1723-1759, English. This oil on panel is a fine example of the early work of Charles Brooking, known as one of the finest British Maritime painters. It is 13" by 19" in a handsome newer frame (overall dimensions of 16 3/4" by 22 2/4".) The condition is good and it is signed indistinctly (as many of his paintings are) on the piece of wood floating in the lower front of the painting. He is listed in Benezit and his paintings sell for up to $400,000.
