This is a modernist work (the medium appears to be tempera on board), measuring 10" by 17" (14" by 20 1/2" framed). It is signed at lower left by noted artist AMBROSE PATTERSON (1877-1967) and titled on the reverse, rather mysteriously, "The Alert". This is a late painting by the artist, who had a very different style earlier in his long painting career. Subject matter is open to viewer interpretation. The surface certainly seems to be complex and quite heavily worked...

Very decorative truly antique, 1770's print of an elegant lady standing, in the sanguine color, crayon technique (also known as "chalk-manner") perfected by talented eighteenth century artist GILLES DEMARTEAU (1722-1776). The print, executed after a painting by the great French Rococo master Jean-Honore Fragonard, measures 15" by 10 5/8" inside the fine French matting, with gilt border and numerous outlines, that in turn housed in a gold leaf antique frame measuring 22" by 18"...

Gouache on paper drawing of a Baltimore Oriole and a blue jay, 12 1/2" by 16" (23 3/4" by 28" framed), signed at lower right by the noted Disney illustrator AUGUST CURLEY LENOX (1908-1986). This is a really nicely executed work, in the style of an illustrator like Lynn Bogue Hunt or William Schaldach or Rex Brasher. Colors are vivid and the realism is such that the viewer can almost "hear" these birds. I suppose it could have been executed as a book or magazine illustration...

Watercolor on paper landscape, 10 1/2" by 7" inside the early-style gold mat, 18 1/2" by 14 1/2" as framed, signed in blue at lower right "J.A. HANCOX". No listings were found for this artist, but the work appears certainly to be of English origin. There is fairly heavy foxing especially at top in the sky, and a small bar of lighter paper there. It appears that the artist signed in lower right corner and then tried to rub it out there before re-signing it two inches higher up.

I do see online information for a California, female artist who signs Sydney Hall, but am not sure this is the same individual. The present work is not brand new; could date to 1980's or 1990's possibly...

19th Century American School 1800-1899 American Artists This is an original oil on canvas painting of an Ox and Cart coming down the road. The painting has 3 intials lower right, they seem to read: "W. ?. S." Weve been unable to make out who the artist was. We feel the painting is from the late 1890's and is most likely American in origin. The painting was expertly done. The canvas laid on board measures 19X13 inches and is in a 19th century gilt frame.

A circa 1990's signed oil on canvas painting of a coastal scene, 8" by 15", approximately 15" by 22" framed, signed lower left by acclaimed contemporary California artist RITA HOFFMAN SHULAK (1947-). I contacted the artist online, and she was kind enough to respond that this was her work, a not completed painting, probably of the La Jolla rocks in San Diego. She said that the work is from a period when she was experimenting with "washes"...

I was not able to locate information on the artist until I dug down into the internet, which provided a snippet from a 1956 Pasadena, California newspaper...

One of a number of fresh and clean examples of William Russell Flint prints in my shop, this is a fine photolithograph, published in 1956 in a limited edition of 700 examples, titled "Le Quatorze Juillet". Flint was in the southern French town of Mauvezin on Bastille Day 1954, and it is thought possible that the sketch he made from his hotel room of the scene he saw in front of him ultimately became this image...

Fine old watercolor and ink drawing of a yard shaded by large tree, a quaint storage shed at right, 13 1/2" by 9 1/4" (21" by 16"), an old typed label on the reverse giving the artist name and biography. Swan was a painter and watercolorist of some note. He studied at the Royal Academy schools, and was recipient of the Landseer Scholarship...

Oil on canvas of a square in Paris, larger size at 31 1/2" by 31 1/2", unframed, signed at lower right corner with what appears as "R. Ode". The painting likely dates to about 1960, judging from the clothing of the people in the image. I do not see a listing by this name but am continuing to research. Condition: the painting will need restoration. The canvas has separated from the stretcher, so the stretcher will need to be replaced, or the canvas will have to be re-attached to the present ...

Found in Connecticut, this beautifully drawn still life features poinsettia in a blue and white vase, other props including a Greek or Russian icon, a book and a plate, the work signed at lower right by artist Charlotte Newton. There is an askart listing for an artist of that name, born in Missouri in 1839, a resident of Los Angeles by 1880, who passed away in 1914. The presence of the poinsettia leads me to believe that this might well be a work by this California artist, but it is difficult...
