Watercolor on paper landscape painting of sheep at the edge of a forest, a small home in the distance across some ponds and lakes, signed at lower right corner by a talented Dutch immigrant to the United States, ADOLPH (also spelled ADOLF) VAN SPANJE (1868-1948). The artist is not widely listed at this time in art directories and online sites, but there is information about him on the net...

This remarkable and rare work, 25 3/4" by 34" (30 1/2" by 39" in contemporary blue framing behind glass), is titled at lower right "Marseille Le Vieux Port" and is signed there "W. Howard". At first glance one thinks this a print of a Raoul Dufy painting, perhaps an exhibition poster, but upon closer inspection it is seen to be in fact an original watercolor by an obviously highly talented artist. The artist is WING HOWARD (1921-1998), associated with Pennsylvania...

This is a very finely executed watercolor on paper of a young woman in the clothing of the old country. I've opened this up and see that the work is on paper laid on a board, and it is not signed. The measurements inside the gold mat are 9 1/4" by 7 1/4" (17" by 13" in ornate old frame). I am sure, given the quality of the work (note the care lavished on the eyes and face, in particular), that the artist would be someone recognized and listed...

A rarely seen print, featuring the familiar, landmark high bridge over the Arroyo Seco in Pasadena, California, by the well-known California plein air impressionist artist BENJAMIN CHAMBERS BROWN (1865-1942). The lithograph is in rich brown ink on watermarked paper (an "A" with eagle). The sheet measures roughly 13" by 16" (margins irregularly cut, though more than ample) and the printed image 9 3/4" by 13". The print is not pencil signed...

**(One of several pencil signed prints by the artist in my shop)**Photolithograph print published by Frost and Reed, 1929, from the original painting by Sir Alfred Munnings, 25 1/2" by 23 1/2" framed, boldly PENCIL SIGNED at lower right margin by the highly important sporting art master, and quite famous English painter of all equestrian subjects, SIR ALFRED J. MUNNINGS (1878-1959)...

Oil on canvas laid on masonite still life painting of pink grapes and a vase, 25" by 30" (31 1/2" by 36 1/2" as framed), signed at lower right by artist G. ANSON WHITE. Strangely, I can find only minimal references to an artist by this name, despite the amazingly skillful and sensitive rendering of the clusters of grapes. In such cases I am often left to wonder if perhaps the artist was actually someone well known who chose to sign the work with a pen name for one reason or another...

Lithograph on paper print of 1897/98, titled "Kraniche" in German, commonly known as "Cranes" or "Swans" in English, the sheet with margins 10 1/4" by 14", unframed, signed in pencil at lower left margin. This is a fine early color lithograph by the noted German artist WALTER LEISTIKOW (1865-1908). Leistikow's talent was nourished at an early age, He studied at the Royal Academy in Berlin, and by 1890 was himself an art professor at the Berlin Art and Craft School...

Lithograph of a bull in what appears to be a stark Southwestern landscape, 12" by 13 3/4" as framed, pencil signed at lower right margin by listed WPA era American artist CHARLES EARLE MILLER (1907-) and with notation "Ed. 30" at center margin. The image is a very powerful one, similar to the work of Peter Hurd, in some ways. Miller was a painter, etcher and lithographer. I see a number of works online dated in the late 1930's and early 1940's, but after that the trail is difficult to follow...

Oil on canvas landscape of a red-painted fishing shack or summer cottage on an idyllic lake, other cottages in the distance, 15" by 18 1/2" (20" by 22 1/2" as framed), signed at lower right "K. Andor". I thought this scene perhaps Swedish, but the name Andor is Hungarian...

Oil on canvas painting of a tabletop with flowers in vase and assorted decorative objects, 20" by 24" (26" by 20 1/2" framed), signed at lower left by artist HAZEL PETRA FETTERLEY BOEHME (1900-1941). On the reverse of the canvas the artist has written the title "Mid-Victorian", the date (May 1932), her name, Los Angeles, Cal., and original price of $75 or possibly $175 (appears she went over the numbers----maybe in difficult Depression times she had second thoughts on pricing)...

Large (20" by 24", 28 1/2" by 32 1/2" framed) watercolor on paper painting of a agriculture-related structure and machinery in a mountainous landscape, a figure at left, signed at lower right and inscribed there "Mexico 1940". The artist is WILLIAM T. McDERMITT (1884-1961), an Illinois-born artist most closely associated with California. According to the Hughes biography, McDermitt studied at Pratt and the Art Students League in New York, and in Europe...

Drawing of a nude woman lying on her side, 10 1/4" by 15" inside the mat, 16 1/2" by 20" in frameless protective framing, signed at lower right "Sean Mayten" or similar, and dated there 1-13-86. The artist does not appear to be listed, at least under that name or variants of it. He seems to have used perhaps grayish-tan silverpoint or other unusual medium to draw this on a pebbled paper. An artistic work with sensitive shading and line. There are some spidery shadows on the drawing near the ...

This is a really beautifully painted oil on a coarse, almost burlap canvas, the subject a sun-dappled yard of a house or other Spanish-California type structure populating old and established affluent communities such as Pasadena or Santa Barbara, tables and chairs in this little paradise awaiting the next social occasion. The work measures 16" by 20", UNFRAMED (the first image, with gold frame, is for display purposes only...again, the item will be sold UNFRAMED). The artist signed at lower ...

Watercolor on paper of gazelle running in an exotic subtropical landscape, 17 1/2" by 13 1/2" inside the mat (27" by 22" framed), unsigned, but obviously by an artist of talent. The work shows a striking visual energy, the animals frozen in mid-step. This could be a scene painted in Africa, or, it could be from the imagination of the artist. The painting probably dates to the 1930's or 1940's or thereabouts; there is an Art Deco feeling. It is in good condition, though the mat and frame are ...

This is an extremely well painted **CONTEMPORARY** oil on canvas, 12" by 16" (18" by 22" nicely framed), executed in the style of notable late 19th century painters such as Jean Beraud (1849-1936) or James Tissot (1836-1902), the principal subject an elegantly dressed young mother with her equally elegantly attired daughter, the remainder of the scene filled with horse drawn carriages, and ladies and gentlemen going about their business in a leafy boulevard, perhaps in a grand park in Paris. Th...

Watercolor on paper painting of an impressive, jagged high mountain peak above a lake, 5 1/2" by 9 1/2" inside the mat (9 3/4" by 12 3/4" as framed), signed lower right, bearing the artist's label and title "Mt. Rockwell/Glacier National Park" on reverse board. This is a work by the California artist RICHARD LEROY CORBALEY (1882-1960). Corbaley was born in Indiana and according to the biography in Hughes' Dictionary of California Artists, he was in Los Angeles by 1902. Works by his hand inclu...

Contemporary watercolor of the famous Pirates Alley in the French Quarter of New Orleans, 10 1/2" by 6 1/2" (18" by 14" in newer framing), signed at lower right. The work is beautifully painted by a talented hand that I cannot identify. Condition is excellent. There is a little bit of loss in the frame at upper left corner and lower center, showing as red areas. Some gold paint would cover these. See many other works of New Orleans in my shop.
