This note shows two book plates depicting flowers. They were provided by Michael Minckler. The plates are signed Takako. Maejima Takako is the name of Maki's wife.

Oil on masonite panel painting of the desert, 12" by 9", signed in capital letters at lower left by listed southwestern artist BILL SHADDIX (1931-). The presence of the iconic saguaro cactus places the scene as east of the Colorado River, therefore in Arizona. Shaddix was born in Oklahoma during the Dust Bowl, and emigrated to California by the early 1940's with his family. A deputy sheriff in Orange County by 1956, he began to paint, and eventually turned full time to his fine art...

A nicely executed good-sized pastel drawing, 19" by 23" (24" by 28" framed), the subject a fast-looking high-end sailboat off a coastline, manned by a number of figures. I would estimate the age as circa 1960's or 1970's. Framed behind detail-dulling non-glare glass, which was common during those years. Frame shows wear, drawing is in excellent condition. Signature "Mather" is at lower left.

Watercolor on paper painting of the architecture of old New Orleans, 14 1/2" by 5" (21" by 11 3/4" framed), signed at lower right with the typical signature of well known illustrator artist ADOLPH KRONENGOLD (1900-1986). Kronengold was educated at Tulane in the 1910's, and in New York and Philadelphia, where he was a Daniel Garber pupil. Information I have seen online states that he established art schools in New York and Alaska...

An interesting painting of a brick church dramatically positioned in a rural landscape with distant mountains, the year 1898 appearing on the lintel over the door, signed at lower right corner "K. Shuck". Online research shows there was a Kenneth M. Shuck associated with the Springfield Museum of Art, having served as its second director, between 1951 and 1976. A 1954 photo online shows him standing in front of a Thomas Hart Benton painting. This may be by that individual...
