Original Harper's Weekly large wood engraving "ON THE WAY TO THE DIGGINGS---HALT IN A ROUGH PASS IN THE ROCKY MOUNTAINS", May 1, 1875, signed in the print by noted artists JULES TAVERNIER (1844-1889) and PAUL FRENZENY (1840-1902). The print is generally clean and fresh considering the advanced age, with the typical center fold and just a barely noticeable 1 1/2" vertical tear extending into the image at bottom center...

A very well rendered watercolor painting on paper, of a Union officer. There is a large amount of background detailing, showing camp tents by a river, with the American flag flying. Superb condition. 8 1/4" by 6 1/4"

This attractive and interesting print is a cover of the November 19, 1897 issue of the famous Parisian literary periodical "Gil Blas", which was issued between the years 1879 and 1914. Named after Alain-Rene Lesage's novel, it was a popular read in the late 19th and early 20th century among the fashionable. It serialized famous novels before they appeared as books...

One of a number of Whistler lithographs I am offering: "Firelight: Joseph Pennell No. 1", 1896, sheet approximately measuring 11 3/4" by 8 1/4", currently in a mat, lightly taped at top edge to backing, not laid down, unframed. Generally clean, with some imperfections along edges (particularly a half-moon shaped area missing from right side, about 1 1/2" by 3/8" wide on average, see images). Stamped on reverse is "Library of London/De-Accessioned"...

Early landscape painting of a likely imaginary, idealized, pyramidal mountain peak of California, (doesn't really resemble Mt. Shasta, but I suppose it could be), 20" by 16" on the stretchers, painted on canvas, 25 3/4" by 21 3/4" in a fine old gold 19th century frame, signed at lower right by artist "C. A. Simpson" and dated there 1886. The painting is firmly in the luminous tradition of some of the eastern Hudson River artists, with a pinkish glow suffusing the sky...

Watercolor on paper country road scene with figure and possibly a horse, 4" by 8 3/4" inside the mat, signed at lower right "Lauro" and inscribed "A mi querido cunado (brother-in-law) Daniel" and dated 1881. I have searched for a listed artist that could correspond to this name but have not come up with a compatible listing. Purchased this at a flea market in Buenos Aires, Argentina...

A plaster of Paris sculpture of St. John the Baptist as a child, sleeping. The boy dressed in camel skin is leaning on a rock, cross in hand and a lamb at his feet. France, mid-19th century, with nice patina and traces of a light blue colouring. Plaster of Paris was a gypsum or chalk mixture used for architectural and art purposes from the beginning of the 19th century and small sculptures, especially with religious themes, were widely exported. Height "3 ½/ 9 cm and width "3 1/3 / 8.5 cm...

An impressively detailed circa 1860's watercolor of Lausanne in western Switzerland, signed at lower right by listed French artist Achille Gratien Gallier (1814-1871). The 150 year old work is in excellent condition, appearing to have been done yesterday. The scene is the Cathedral of Notre Dame (dating to as early as 1170) and nearby buildings, with tiny figures in the foreground, and even their hound dogs playing at lower left...

Decorative old engraving of early New York, printed in Paris, circa 1850, with quality contemporary framing and hand drawn mat lines. This lovely print is ready to hang in your traditional fine interior. The print is exceptionally clean and fresh as is the mat (photo shows what appears as a scratch in glass at upper left, it was simply foreign matter I removed easily after the photo). The work bears a label of Summa Gallery, Brooklyn Heights, New York. Measurements 12 1/4" by 13 1/4".

Attractive old antique print titled "Public landing. Cincinnati", identified by writing on backing as having come from Ballou's Pictorial Companion, 1855. measuring 11" by 15" in its old dark (probably stained walnut) frame with gold fillet. Condition appears fresh and excellent overall. The coloring is hand-applied. An interesting addition to your historic Ohio River or Cincinnati home or office.

Fine decorative 19th century engraving print, titled at bottom margin "Philadelphia from Belmont (WEST PARK)", by English-born artist ROBERT HINSHELWOOD (1812-1879). Hinshelwood came to the United States in 1835 as a young man and pursued his art skills, in both painting and engraving. In this case he seems to have engraved after his own original painting---a fairly rare skill combination...

Coastal watercolor and gouache painting, the scene likely of the New England shoreline, perhaps near Boston, waves breaking on a beach with rocky outcroppings, signed at lower right corner by artist SHARP. The painted area of the work measures 6" by 12", the sheet on which it is painted 8 3/4" by 14 3/4". The painted area is not a separate sheet laid down to a backing----it is all one sheet...

Oil on canvas scene of two white swans in a small lake or pond in a rural area, 24" by 16" (29" by 21" in wide newer frame), signed in red "W W Caffyn" at lower right and dated there "96"...

PAIR of watercolor paintings of southern Italian street scenes, each 14" by 8 1/2" (17" by 11 1/2" as identically framed in early 20th century frames).
