An opportunity to acquire an original oil on canvas painting by a very highly esteemed twentieth century California artist, the works of whom have exceeded $50,000 at auction. This work is signed at lower right by California twentieth century artist ROGER KUNTZ (1926-1975). The subject is apparently a coastline with abstracted trees and houses next to a dark blue sea. The work itself measures 12" by 16" (17 1/2" by 21 1/2" in a quality frame by Munn, a respected old La Cienega Boulevard framer)...

Frank Vining Smith (1879 - July 30, 1967) was an American marine painter who specialized in sailing ships. Smith previously studied alongside Philip Hale, Frank Benson, and Edmund C. Tarbell at the Boston Museum School. He also attended Central Ontario Design School in Toronto and the Art Students League in New York City. After working for newspapers as an illustrator, he quit his job and devoted his time to painting naval scenes...

A circa 1960's or early 1970's mixed media collage painting of a "Big Eyed" girl and her doll, painted in his usual whimsical fashion, by the French mid century impressionist artist ROGER ETIENNE (1922-2011). The painting (23 1/4" by 17 1/2", and 29 1/4" by 23 1/4" as framed) is signed at lower right "Rousseau", but this fools no one; it is clearly by the artist Roger Etienne. Why he chose to use a pen name on this particular example will remain an unknown...

"Roman Bridge at Arles" by Jacques Martin-Ferrieres (1893-1972), Oil on Canvas, 33 x 41" Jacques Martin-Ferrieres was born in 1893 in Saint-Paul de Vence in South Eastern France into a family of artists, including his father Henri Martin, the famous pointillist. He began his formal training at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, studying under Frederic Cormon and Ernest Laurent, but soon looking away from academic conventions and restraints of the day...

One of dozens of drawings by this artist that I recently acquired, (ask to see others, not shown in my shop) this is a fine image in soft pencil and ink on paper, the drawing itself 10" by 13 1/2", in a simple frame without mat, signed with initials at right and dated '65, by California and Massachusetts listed artist DAISY MARGUERITE HUGHES (1882-1968). Hughes was born and died in Los Angeles but in between she spent much time in the Provincetown art colony on Cape Cod...

Original black-painted terra cotta sculpture of the head of an apparently African-American man, signed at the base "Marion Goodman". To date I have not located a listing for an artist by this name. The sculpture, which has some age (circa 1950's to 1970'?) measures roughly 18" high by 11" by 8"(including base) and weighs 22 pounds. The artist worked the clay with great skill to create a very life-like face, and the curls of the hair are also treated with care...

This is a very decorative item of impressive size for your Southwest style home: a gouache painting on cloth, roughly square at 30 1/8" by 30 7/8" plus about 3 1/2" on a side of frame and undermat......no signature that I can see but it reminds me of the popular "yeibichai" weavings of the Navajo and Hopi Southwest. The condition is excellent and this is ready for the wall. Allow for reflections in the glass.

Original mixed media (watercolor, gouache, ink) on paper by Judith Shahn (USA, born in Paris, worked in New York and Cape Cod, 1929-2009). Signed lower right. Frame is by Robert Kulicke. Judith Shahn was Ben Shahn's daughter. She studied with her father and Moses Soyer. Her work appeared in the New Yorker Magazine, Harpers, The Nation, etc.

Oil on board painting of a harbor with small boats, 11 3/4" by 14", (15 1/2" by 17 1/2" in stained oak frame), said by a handwritten note on the reverse to be Morro Bay in central California. The note reads "View of Morro Bay/by Mary Harrington on trip of California coast with friends Mr. & Mrs. Dan Castro 1961". The painting might be signed by the artist at lower right; difficult to see among the browned varnish...

A charming, signed, pastel portrait by Dorothy Colles (1917-2003) who was (according to an obituary published in the Independent newspaper) "gifted in portraits of children". This picture was drawn circa 1963 (please see our other Colles picture) and was a commissioned piece for an advertising poster. Dorothy Colles has exhibited through the Royal Academy and the Royal Society of Portrait Painting. Condition - excellent. The picture 20 inches by 17.7 inches (51cm x 45cm)...

A complex mixed media drawing, in the style of Russian artist Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944), featuring geometric shapes and forms, measuring 7 1/2" by 11 3/4" inside the mat opening (17" in 21" in frame). The drawing is created with graphite, watercolor, gouache and perhaps pastel crayon. The detail is tight and finished. A very decorative work with color and form, sure to be a conversation piece.

Watercolor and gouache impressionist painting of the Dead Sea in Israel, signed in pencil at lower right in modern Hebrew script as "Hana Bar(-on)" or "Chana Bar(-on) and dated there 1970. Below that in Hebrew is written "iam hamelach" (Dead Sea). I am not able to read Hebrew but was able to show this to a Hebrew reader. The work measures 13 1/2" by 19 1/4", and is presently unframed. It can be shipped between boards or in the plastic poster box in which it is presently loosely housed...
