Oil on canvas landscape of country cottages and feathery trees on the banks of a small pond or marsh, 9" by 12" (13" by 21" in its modern frame), signed at lower right "S. Clark", the subject given on the framing label as "On the Arun--Sussex". This is a painting by SAMUEL JOSEPH CLARK (1841-1928), a noted 19th century painter of rural landscapes and genre. Florine Hyer was an Iowa-born artist who became known for her exquisite paintings of roses. She was in Los Angeles by 1898, and remained there her entire life with the exception of the year 1908, when she assisted the botanist Luther Burbank at his home and gardens in Santa Rosa, in Sonoma County north of San Francisco. Burbank is reputed to have said, "Florine can paint roses better than gardens can grow them"...

This is a very finely executed watercolor on paper of a young woman in the clothing of the old country. I've opened this up and see that the work is on paper laid on a board, and it is not signed. The measurements inside the gold mat are 9 1/4" by 7 1/4" (17" by 13" in ornate old frame). I am sure, given the quality of the work (note the care lavished on the eyes and face, in particular), that the artist would be someone recognized and listed...
