The engraving has been cut down within the plate marks and the legend at the bottom is rather damaged but still readan=ble.The engraved portrait is in good condition and has long ago been mounted on a strengthenoing sheet of paper. Sherwin was a well regarded follower of the more famous Bartolozzi. The portrait was engraved in the year of the French Revolution...

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE: Information about Charles Dixon (fl 1748 - 1798) appears to be quite sparse, and there is not even certainty that his first name was Charles since those pieces he signed were done so with "CD"...

A finely painted watercolor portrait of a good looking gentleman wearing a black jacket and a white shirt, stock and collar. The talented artist specifically painted the entire piece in shades of white, black, and gray. Note the way he used white highlighting on the left collar and shoulder of the sitter to give a sense of depth to the piece.

Original eighteenth century engraving by the famous artist GIOVANNI BATTISTA PIRANESI (1720-1778), titled "Veduta interna di una delle tre sale sepulcrale credute della Famiglia di Augusto". This is a classic print by the undisputed master of architectural views, the sheet measuring 19 5/8" by 22 3/4". Condition is fair with old oxidation, foxing, and stains in the extreme lower corners, and, the piece has the normal center fold. More photos on request.
